what else is your system? budget?

290 would do it and be the cheapest option.

I5 4690K, Z97X mobo, Lots of fast ram, Big ass 700W 80+ Silver PSU, decent case cooling Antec 100, Hyper 212+ CPU cooler, 27" 1080P 5MS LG IPS monitor ... all solid specs. Will upgrade over time but GPU "HD 7850 2GB" is the weak link today.

For me the 970 is no where near worth $100 more than a 290. Heck with my processor I can run any game @ 60fps on almost any GPU with reduced settings. I really don't care about a few bits more eye candy here or there that a slightly faster GPU will deliver. I am the type that has no problem turning settings down until I maintain 60fps locked with not drops. That said I would like to enjoy GTA V in all its glory as it is one of them games that only come by once in a few years. I have waited patently this long for GTA V PC Master Race Edition and I would like to max out all it's spaghetti strapped bikini clad sexiness @ 1080P 60fps locked. No more bulling simulator with cousin Roman @ 30fps LOL.

i completely agree with you. R9 290 is the best value for your money. I was just giving you options. For performance reviews of GTA V here it is

You can find cheaper GTX970s in Canada such as this Gigabyte 970 for $410after rebate. The OP can keep or sell The Witcher 3 game coupon. Alternatively I would look at Kijiji/Craigslist for a used after-market R9 290/290X.

That's a $470 GPU in Canada and $450 after rebate which I don't deal with rebates. $470 is a far cry from the $330 MSPR of the 970 and it's no where near worth it for me. I am not to keen on used 290s cause they might have been mined on.

Thats weird, while the NCIX page was loading for me it showed the card as $409.99CAD AR, but then it switched to $449.99 AR when everything was loaded...

Edit - Now it shows $409.99 again, I'm just really confused. Either way, looks like that isn't the card for you.

Edit2 - Might be the referral link, if I open up a new page and search for the card on NCIX's website it shows $409.99, but if I click RS's link it shows $449.99. o_O

On my PC it switches from $429 to $469. We normally never get deals on GPUs in Canada so you can bet you will be paying more at checkout. The last time decent deals were in Canada for GPUs is when AMD forced NCIX to do a price slash on select AMD R9 video cards and at that time you could get an R9 290 for $370 out the door and that was the best price in recent memory/history.

By the way, I want to mention that you will need to turn down some settings to make it stay above 60FPS 100% of the time. Even my "possibly unstable" max overclock, I was still getting dips to the low 50s. It really sucked since this game looks and feels horrible to me with my monitor if v-sync is off. Yet if it's on with near-max settings, the game stutters like crazy... Really, this of those games where you pretty much have to turn some settings which don't have much effect on IQ down for best results. R* said that SLI GTX 980s can max this out at 4K and get 60FPS, but there's no way...

I don't mind turning AA off which is mostly what I always do unless the jaggies are extremely horrible to the point of game breaking.

GTA V has allot of tearing when Vsync is off. Good thing now in days you can run games without framerate drops with Vsync on.

There are graphs in the other thread with FPS for multiple GPUs.

This game does run better on Nvidia hardware and the 970 will be slightly faster than a 290 in this game.

However the question for you will be is it worth it.

IMO if you are looking forward to The Witcher 3 and enjoy other Gameworks games, get the 970. If not get the 290.

Oh well I guess I will just have to turn down some settings until I hit the 62fps minimum on my Intel 4690K. I hope nvidia does not frig up TW3 like they did with all the other Fail "Game that does not work" games.

You are thinking about Ubisoft. They are the ones destroying their own reputation, Nvidia just is unfortunately along for the ride as a partner.

I would reconsider it after the terrible launches they have had if I were Nv. When you are including a game with your product and putting your name on the game as well, it does reflect poorly when it does not even work. I imagine there were some unhappy executives over ACU that was included with the 900 series shortly after launch.

NCIX has a nice sale on a Radeon 290 right now... $350C which is $60 cheaper than a Geforce 970.

Personally, I'm saving up for the 970... but that's just me.

I am pretty sure when Canada Computers had their R9 200 cards on clearance, there were $299 R9 290s and may be even 1 or 2 R9 290Xs at $299. I also clearly remember recommending a $299 CDN Gigabyte Windforce 290 from NCIX months ago. A lot of the time these deals only stay active for a day or 2 since they sell out of inventory.

In the heavy outdoor areas with grass, you won't be able to get any card in your price range that will give you 60 fps Ultra at all times.
