Netgears are pretty solid. They are more expensive than alternatives (like a good TrendNet metal-casing Gigabit switch), but they also carry a lifetime warranty (at least in the USA).

I wouldn't get their plastic-cased switches though, I had a lot of trouble with one of them one time, I think it might have been overheating.

Edit: I should clarify, I believe that not all Netgear switches have a lifetime warranty, only the "ProSafe" models.

? Gigabit should be 90MB/sec +.
Depends what's at each end of the cable. The slower device will bottleneck you.

Older laptops with spinner hard drives? USB externals? Shared USB drives connected to a *shudder* router? 30MB/sec is a GOOD day.

I usually wait for this to go on sale:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...cm_re=trendnet_gigabit-_-33-156-251-_-Product

It usually comes down to $15-$20. They're metal and of good construction I think. I just wired my new house with CAT6 / CAT5e this past week... with this as the only inbetween device of my 2 desktop PC's... I transferred about about 113MB/s which is a little over 900mbps... pretty close to maxing the 1gbps.

This was SSD to SSD.
