Looking for new CPU upgrade

Hi, I want to upgrade my pc to something faster on the cheap side, what would be a good upgrade from a E8400@3.ghz, havent even logged in in over a year so i have no idea whats going on right now as far as CPUs. Intel or AMD does not matter to me. any help would be great, Thanks

1. In what tasks do you find your CPU too slow?
2. What is the primary use for this computer?
3. What's your budget? Your CPU platform uses DDR2. In other words, you'd need a new mobo + cpu + ddr3 ram. It's impossible to upgrade on the cheap in your case and still get a lot more performance unless you find a used Q9550 and sell the E8400.

Core 2 Quad CPU I think without changing mobo. AMD is cheap although I wouldn't go cheap, i'd go fast, expensive and reliable. If it takes more time to get money or faster hardware, then so be it.

overclock that E8400 and it should be fast enough for any game (if you mostly game...)
it can do 400x9=3.6GHz effortlessly without voltage increase.
