looking for a new computer desk, similar to those used by audio/video editors. problem is they are so expensive. anyone know where i can get them cheaply? ive tried finding some used on craigslist, and ikea, staples and they dont list them there.

Good desks are expensive. Depending on where you live, you may be able to pick up a desk second hand at garage;yard sales, et c. Local classified ads are also a pretty good place to check, and any businesses that liquidate their office supplies (like in bankruptcy) would have similar stuff for sale. Once I bought a steel office desk with the metal hutch for $1 at an auction at the local state college. There's another thread about a guy building a desk (http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...tid=38&threadid=1935420&enterthread=y) here, and if you google around you can find more stuff about making a computer desk. These ideas will really depend on your flexibility with the desk. If you insist on a specific type of desk, maybe you can call local businesses that do that sort of work and ask if they have any pointers?

If you're not looking for anything too heavy to go on the desk you can get by really simple -- I've seen a cut plywood sheet over two sturdy sawhorses, filing cabinets with boards on them, et c. Once you really figure out what space you need, it's just a matter of getting that surface supported.
