I'm not a heavy gamer but I do play a lot of 3D FPS's like Ghost Recon, America's Army, Battlefield Vietnam, etc...

I'm looking hard at the GeForce FX 5900 XT becuase it offers decent performance at a nominal price. Everything else is $300 - $400+.

My budget is under $250.

Any suggestions?

My mobo is an Abit KX7-333 (from a few years ago) so its maxed out with AGP 4x.

I'm not looking for a total system upgrade - I just want to replace a faulty GeForce 3 that I currently have.

the 5900xt is a pretty solid card. If I were you though, I would wait a little bit and pick up a 6600GT. You'll get a whole lot more bang for your buck.

For under $250 you have some good option, for quality vs performance.

1)The MSI 5900XT is a very good card.I used to own it, but i got some problems with it tho.It doesnt mean you will have problem,me i was having graphic issues with my mobo.Dunno why

2)radeon 9800 pro 128meg http://www.newegg.com/app/View...=14-102-268&depa=0

very good card.Propbably best bang for your buck atm.Was also owner of a radeon 9800 pro.I had some conflict with drivers tho.But again, i think my mobo was the problem. So i dont want to scare you.

after that you can go lower, and cahper too, 9600xt,9600pro, fx5700(i dont really recommand fx5700)

Best shot for less problem? Get the ATI BRAND( not saphire) radeon 9800 pro 128meg. its 25$ more expensive, but i think it worth having the original brand in your machine.

Whats is your system spec atm? cpu? how much ram?

also, if you get one of those new gen cards, make sure to connect a POWER SUPPLY connector on the card, those card required that.If you dont do that you card will run very very crappy :)

My system is an AMD Athlon XP2100+, 512MB DDR, AGP 4x

Again, it's not cutting edge but I'm just trying to replace a busted GeForce 3 (displaying lots of artifacts now and unplayable with 3D FPS's).

Will the 6600 GT AGP outperform the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro? Or will the GT AGP cost a lot more?

The 9800 Pro looks like a winner for me in terms of performance and price (as of right now at least).

The 6600GT should be a bit faster than the 9800 pro, so if you can get it for the same price I would get the 6600. But I'm quite happy with my 9800pro :)

If you can't wait for a 6600 GT I would get a 9800 pro my friend has one and it is night and day better than his old 5200. If you like ATI and dont want a 9800 you could also think about an x700. I would stay away from anything faster as it will be bottlenecked by your system.
