Can anyone suggest an mp3 player for less than $100 (even willing to buy a used/ebay unit)that has these features:

-good bluetooth range
-good sound quality
-fairly good battery life
-fairly compact
-at least 8gb or more

I would like the unit to have at least 30ft or even more bluetooth range

Yeah, you're shopping for a phone. Plenty of cheap prepaids out there will do what you want. You don't need any service and can disable the cell antenna to save the battery.

You shouldn't have to worry about Bluetooth range -- the typical spec is 33 feet, so it's just a question of whether or not it's reliable.

I'd see if you can score an iPod nano on sale or used, preferably the 7th-gen model. It's tiny (but not too tiny), long-lasting and touts Bluetooth audio that you know will work well. If not that... Sony's NW-E390, perhaps?

I see a lot of ipod nanos on local craigslist and ebay. I've never been an apple person. None of my mp3 files have ever been downloaded via itunes. Is itunes a must to easily use an ipod?

Check out swappa.com and look over their phone selection. You could picked up a nexus device or old iPhone that would fit the bill.

I just looked and there's a iPhone 5c or Samsung S4 for ~$99

...
probably some cheap windows phone.

You must be a Best Buy sales rep with that kind of succinct, detailed suggestion.

I think there are third-party apps (DoubleTwist, maybe?), but iTunes is usually the easiest route. An important point: you don't need to have downloaded the songs through iTunes to sync them... you just need to import them to iTunes if you want it to sync them.

walkman has terrible capacity and last time I walked through BB they had them on clearance. Only real options are an ipod or a smart phone of your choosing.

I'd recommend something with expandable storage, so an Android or Windows Phone device. They're much easier to deal with in terms of putting songs on the actual device. The iPod experience is subpar and iTunes is just a pile of crap (especially on Windows).

Only the cheap-o ones. The $300+ have mSD as well as higher base capacities.

I just literally bought a moto e from Verizon, and it is awesome. While I do not have a super large microSD card yet, it is reassuring to know it can go up to 200GB. For $25 I wouldn't look any further. It is brand new and will last a whole day if not longer on battery.
