Looking for moving advice - Portland, OR or Lexington, KY

Looking at moving out of the Central Oregon area. Beautiful, but noooo friggin IT jobs to speak of. Especially nothing in the high-level tech support or database developer areas. And it doesn't help that the software development company I worked for just laid off half their employees to add to the local competition.

Have a couple options I'm considering off the top of my head (although would welcome other suggestions!):

Portland, OR. Lots of IT jobs. LOTS more competition - this might be bad. I 'only' have an AAB in IS, 2-year vocational cert, and 8 years work experience in high-level tech support/database work (should have an A+ cert in a few weeks). In Portland...that's not worth much at all.

Not being from *up* there, of course - are there any definitely good or bad suburbs to seek out/avoid for buying?

Lexington, KY. Smattering of IT jobs. Not as much competition (or pay) - the listings I've seen definitely have requirements that fall well within my skill set. We are from OH originally, and have spent a LOT of time in OH, PA, NC, VA, etc...not much in KY, but what was there we liked. How's the market *really* like there, though? And what about places to check out to buy into?

Don't move to Portland. We have too many people already.

Hey now, I'm already IN Oregon - I use (a modification of) that line *myself* thankyouverymuch. 😉

I would first visit Lexington, KY to see if you like it. If you don't, move to PDX.

I have not been there - just other cities in the state. Very laid back, has some appeal to me. Wife loves horses a LOT, though, and we do like the rolling landscapes.

She has been to Lexington - indeed, has family in the area (her sister), so it does make sense from some perspective.
