Looking for motherboard for new build

Im building a new computer with a Q6600 and an 8800gts (g92) but I just cant pick out the right motherboard. The computer will be used mostly for gaming and I will be overclocking everything heavily, Im also not going SLI right off the bat and most likely never will.

My original choice for a mobo was the BFG 680i, I can get a new one right now for $140. But, after doing some research I dont think its the right board. It looks like BIOS updates have fixed the quad core overclocking problems, but I want a board that will support 45nm processors because I dont do major overhauls often.

After looking through the sticky there are two boards Im looking at;

DFI UT P35-T2R
Asus P5K Deluxe/WiFi-AP

Both are close in price on newegg but I am leaning more towards the DFI because I am so into overclocking. The only thing Im concerned with the DFI is will it support 45nm processors?

Lastly, I also have the opportunity to buy a new Intel 975 BX2 from a friend for $120. How is that for overclocking? will it support the 45nm processors?

Unless i'm horribly mistaken, the 680i and P35 boards you've listed all support 45nm and 1333MHz FSB (according to spec pages) - you just need to update the BIOS. Based on recent posts tho, you may want to do some digging on the specific boards you're interested in and see how others are making out.

Oops, let me rephrase that. Does the BFG 680i support quad core 45nm processors? I know they currently support dual core 45nm cpus, but Im wondering if there could be an update for it to support the quad cores.

Hi Zylander. I don't believe you'll be able to run the new 45nm quads in the 680i. Check out the 780i thread in this section started by Lopri. In there, someone posted a link to this article:

If I were you, I'd stick to P35 chipsets in the price range you're talking about. The P5K Deluxe is a fine board for OCing quads. And since you mentioned DFI, you should also look at the P35 Dark T2RS which came out recently also:

Reference design 680i will not support 45nm Quad Cores.

ASUS and DFI 680i might get 45nm Quad Core support in the coming weeks because they do not use the reference design.

780i would be a safer choice in the long run if you plan on upgrading to 45nm Quad core.

A P35 would be better overall if you plan on never using more than 1 of those 8800GTSs. The P35 will overclock better and more easily than the nVidia boards.

I would say this.... Get the DFI UT P35-T2R, its an overclocking beast from what i've seen online, and for sure it will support the 45nm procs.

Well I am now leaning back to the 680i. After some thinking I dont really care about 45nm compatibility, so that leaves me with two choices for a motherboard;

BFG 680i or the Intel BX2. Im pretty much just looking for the better overclocker.
