I was looking for a new motherboard to fit my new X2 4800 into. Its got to be a s939, fit 184 pin ram sticks, my 6800gt agp gfx card, and my 20pin power connector.

I heard from somewhere that 4x on the agp isnt the greatest for gaming and after some searching, everything is moving away from agp to begin with. I was wondering if there were any higher end motherboards that supported higher than just 4x (i dont even know what that means lol). Considering im spending over 300+ dollars upgrading from my 3000+ amd s754, i wanna good upgraded mobo as well. thx!

Maybe you shouldn't be building your own PC if you don't know what the AGP numbers mean.

AGP4X is generally fast enough, AGP8X was largely a marketing thing, but every so rarely can make a difference. Every board produced in the last few years supports AGP 8X, as have almost all video cards.

The ASRock 939DUal-SATA2 is generally considered one of the best, if not the best, option if you need AGP support. You can also buy an upgrade card to allow you to later install a newer Socket AM2 processor (assuming the upgrade cards are ever available and are still available when you need one). You also get PCI-Express support if you later decide to upgrade your video card.

Depending on exactly what board you have at the moment, you may not really be "upgrading" as far as motherboard performance. The CPU has the memory controller, so all you may be essentially doing is having to get a new mainboard to get the higher CPU/memory performance.

Incidentally, thread in Motherboards about the board.
