I just put together a SFF system, and the stock i3 530 cooler is very loud, compared to the cooler I had on the E6750 (a nice whooshing sound). This thing has an annoying buzzing sound, and is the loudest thing in the PC.

Here's the thing, I have an In-Win BK623 case, http://www.bigbruin.com/2007/inwinmtjade_5
that has the shroud and optical drive interference with the height of a cooler. I am looking for something, I guess that is about the height of a Conroe E6750 cooler (the good copper core type, should fit), and the diameter of a stock Intel cooler LGA1156. Aluminum vs copper doesn't matter since even this Intel Al cooler seems to do the job, only that it is noisy, and really annoying when ramping up with temp.

Generally, the Intel coolers are low noise. Does it change when applying gentle pressure to the middle or around the frame? Have you tried remounting it? If still noisy, you may consider replacing it under warranty.

Yeah, Intel coolers usually have the lowest noise among other non-passive HSF. The only aftermarket coolers I know (that aren't towers) are the Scythe Shuriken and CM Geminii. But you might as well see if the noise is coming from a faulty stock heatsink and replace it.

I tried putting a bit of pressure in the middle as well as on the frame, and nothing changed. It is not the PSU fan nor is the 80mm fan I have velcroed into the case. I stopped the cpu fan with my finger and the noise stopped. I have switched over to Voltage Mode instead of PWM, it is not ramping up with that annoying noise, but I can still hear the buzzing of the fan. It isn't the case vibrating noise because I touch the case and the sound doesn't subside. Is it possible to just RMA the retail cooler to Intel (without the CPU, nothing wrong with it)?

Are there any wires that are too close to the fan maybe? Since you say it's a buzzing noise, I wouldn't rule that out...

i'll check again, but when I take my finger and manually stop the fan from spinning I don't get the noise anymore. Up to about 1000rpm the fan is tolerable, but beyond that it gets very noisy.
