because they're damned cheap. They're selling a 9600 non-pro 128mb for $65. $65! The consumer reviews say it will play Doom3 on med quality @ 1024. (Can any 9600 do that?) But for $65 and passive cooling I want to see what the community thinks. Their ram is cheap too. and cases. I'm going to build a secondary system that needs to be hella cheap and doesn't need to cater to an enthusiast. It just needs to run Win98SE well.

The big red flag that should be going up for you is the following:

Is it a 9600, or a 9600SE?

The former has a 128-bit memory bus and makes a good midrange gamer card.

The latter is bested by a hamster on a wheel with a D-Sub coming out of it.

It doesn't say SE anywhere or tell the speed of the bus. But there's a card that looks exactly the same (no difference at all) for $76.

The $76 is probably the non-crippled version, a true 9600. I have that and it works fine for if I want to mess around with a couple demos I have (I don't yet know if I will have the time/interest to play games on my computer). With medium details, it runs the Far Cry demo pretty smoothly at 10x7, and UT2004 at 12x10 well too. I sort of wish I had spend a bit extra for a Pro or XT, but it still seems a pretty good value for the money.
