I was having an argument with a friend last night about some classical guitar. I've been a fan of paco de lucia for some years and definitely john mclaughlin. i ended up showing him these youtubes in no particular order. we both have been playing guitar for about ten years, and in my opinion we both suck, i just happen to suck a good deal less.

upon hearing these, he told me that all they were doing were banging the fastest notes in the scale that they possibly could, "paying no attention to melody" anywhere in the song. he said they were playing that fast, not for the song, but only to awe the listeners. He said anyone who plays that fast is not filling any musical requirements, they are only "flexing their muscles," as in for purely spectacle.
I suggested that there is probably a tempo beyond which his ability to listen closely falters. Anyway, his rebuttal example was purple haze by hendrix, because according to him it is "more beautiful and less showy." Now, when i was in high school, i loved the blues and classic rock and all that. I was easily entertained by many things, and blues was one of them. But for those of us who grew out of that, i think we understand hendrix has his place and his time and don't see at all how a 1960's blues player compares to someone like paco de lucia.
Comments? how do you win an argument like this with tact? This kid's musical influences are incredibly gay. I'll have to get some names off of his computer sometime. it basically all sounds like that alternative, bohemian, pussyface rock. like the garden state soundtrack. i told him to stop listening to nursery rhymes or he is never going to be educated in music.
