**Instead of making a new post, I edited everything D:**
I've been using a Creative Fatal1ty for far too long, although I guess for the price of ~$30 it's not all that terrible. In any case, it's time to upgrade to something way better, but it's a serious jungle out there.
I've gone back and forth between gaming headsets on the one hand and a sound card with actual headphones on the other, and I think I've talked myself into the more expensive solution; that is, a sound card and expensive headphones.
In terms of the sound card, all I really require is something that does virtual surround for gaming purposes - music and movies are enjoyed on my stereo system. I was perusing the Asus Xonar range such as DS, DG and DX, but quite frankly I'm clueless as to what I'm even looking for.
In terms of budget, would definitely prefer to keep it sub-$100, but that being said I don't really know what money can buy.
With respect to headphones, am I to understand that an appropriate sound card will make any set of stereo headphones output 5.1 or 7.1 surround? What kind of requirements need to be fulfilled by the headphones for that to work successfully? The Beyerdynamic DT-770/990 look pretty sweet. I don't have much of an aversion to expensive headphones since they're so versatile; when I can use them to listen to music on the go, it becomes a much better investment.
I'd require a mic as well, just for use on Skype, absolutely no recording or anything like that - still has to be decent though, as in no static and something that doesn't pick up sounds from everywhere. Does the Zalman ZM-Mic1 fit the bill?
