Anyhoo, I'd say go for e2c's as they sound sweet and are fairly reasonably priced. When you're looking at £175 for the e3c's it starts to get a bit expensive unless you're some kind of professional musician. Especially since these things will likely take a beating being chucked onto tables/getting wet if ti rains/etc.

depends on how much cash you have lying about.

Yep, he probably uses more bandwidth than the people who make the posts in the supposed "wrong" forum.

Considering to my ONE post there were THREE replies and this thread is continuing with 11 OTHER posts, I'm hardly using up the majority of bandwidth. 🙂

Stop, Just shut the fvck up nick, nobody wants to hear your stupid posts about how it's in "THE WRONG FORUM!" HERES A LINK! :CLICKHERE I don't care nik, I really don't, I just don't fvcking care anymore and neither does anybody else. I've been here for over a year, I know what is appropriate to post in OT, and I VERY WELL KNOW that if something I post that is innapropriate for OT, and I post there anyways, it's probably because I HAVE A FVCKING REASON and NOT because I don't know the correct forum.

I don't consider these headphones peripherals because they're not computer related, I have no plans to use it with the computer EVER! Peripherals in my book, ESPCIALLY on a computer forum would be like KB/Mouse. OR speakers or BLAH BLAH BLAH! Do you really believe these posts are going to help? DO yOU!? I believe NOT, I believe you're just neffing because you have no fvckiing life with nothing better to do. You have 49k posts! Does that make you special? Does it? Since you can't really force him to stop doing it, the next best thing is to just ignore the posts. It's the people that keep responding to them that make the matter worse.

9/10 ::applause:: good rant

I am also clapping. I've only been here at ATOT for a very short time but I have already gotten tired of Nik's useless and annoying WRONG FORUM posts. If his posts were actually funny and made me laugh that might be a little different.

Going to have to *gasp* agree with Nik here. There are multiple forums for a reason; to keep the amount of new threads in each forum manageable. If the site weren't very popular it could get by with just a single forum, but AT has so many users even when people aren't posting in the wrong forums OT threads can make page 2 in the blink of an eye. Imagine if every hardware thread, every software thread, every programming thread and every game thread were made to OT. It'd be like sifting through email at an address you'd given to several porn sites - impossible.

A parallel - I play WoW and have permanently left the general chat channel because people use it for PvP chat instead of the PvP channel (Local Defense - a channel I left immediately upon starting the game, as I don't PK). That's understandable - most people who play WoW are 12 year olds repeating third grade for the fourth time. It'd be nice to see a little more presence of mind on a tech forum though.

Not to be a total ass - OP, you need to give more information. You've said you need portable in-ear phones. What is your budget? Do you prefer sound isolation (you can't hear outside noise and people can't hear your music)? What type of music do you listen to? What phones have you heard, and what did you like / dislike about them? Shure IEMs tend to sacrifice accuracy for a good low end, while Etymotics tend toward the opposite.

yea ur gonna have to spend atleast 60+bucks for those fancy shures or equivalents.

and nik must really enjoy being hall monitor. he's certainly not being paid 😛 some people are just weird.

Your last bit of information was useful, well I'd like to get the best of both worlds and total sound isolation sounds great although I plan to jog with these. I'll likely leave one phone out when jogging because I get paranoid and even open ear ones wouldn't be good enough (worries about a dude coming up from behind and killing me or what ever) and yes I know I'm paranoid about that.

"You should post this in Software, because you're likely to get better responses there.."

Done that. Explained how if everyone would post in the correct forum, everyone would get faster responses overall. That didn't change anything; I still got people flaming me over it.

"Well, my opinion is XXXXXX, but likely you'll find more educated ones in the OS forum..."

"I'm pretty sure that XXXX is the case, but the people in Networking might know better."

Used to do that too; didn't work either.

These are all appropriate "wrong forum" posts. They contribute something to the discussion, and they show you're seeking more than ego++ or postcount++.

A link is perfectly appropriate. I'm hardly seeking a higher post count or ego.

well, i just bought myself a pair of sony mdr-ex81's... they're pretty good 'phones and the sound isolation is pretty nice... which is quite different from my sennheiser HD570's, which, don't get me wrong; sound great, but they're open air and can easily be heard by people other than me, so those are my "at-home" headphones. but my sony's, which replaced my sennheiser MX300 earbuds are awesome; the inside the ear formfactor is really nice because they're lightweight, stay put, and sound great. I use the bass booster eq setting on my ipod and the sound is just awesome. now granted, these aren't quite as good as the shures, but they also cost about half that of the cheapest shures (e2c). I got them from buy.com for thirty-something shipped... can't beat it.

Personally I'd use whatever garbage buds I had laying around for jogging - but I sweat a lot, so that factors into it. Regardless, with the seal IEMs create, your footfalls will be very audible and pretty much negate the higher quality sound.

Different sounds aren't necessarily better or worse - some prefer the Etymotic sound, some the Shure sound. Quality audio is more often about different tastes and compromises between them rather than a linear scale of quality. Ideally you should audition a few phones, preferably the models you're considering buying, but even some standard phones would help to get an idea of your tastes. What kind of music do you listen to, btw? This has a part in it all as well, as some phones are better for some genres than others.

Well it's not like I'd JUST jog with them but I'd like to be able to jog with them. Here are the genres I don't listen to: Country, classical (for the most part), jazz, emo, goth garbage, alternative and a few others.

ok, first off, i got a killer deal on the ipod, as well as the fact that i can connect it to my car system and control it through the head unit, and say what you will, it's damn easy to use, the main thing i don't like about it is itunes.

another side note about the sennheisers....the mx300's came with my old 20gb rio karma, and are pretty decent earbuds. The HD570's normally sell for like $140, and i got them from work for $20... i know good headphones... the 570's are the best i own and they sound really good but they lack a little bit of bass and have a fairly low sensitivity due to higher impedance, so without a headphone amplifier they're a little quiet. The sony 81's are pretty good for what they are... they're a great value... highs are fairly well pronounced, although they get a little muddy at higher volumes, mids are pretty good; but the bass, especially when comparing to an earbud, is very good. this is mainly because they seal your ear canal, this way, more sound is kept inside your ear...

what i'm basically getting at, is that from what i understand, you don't want to spend the kind of money to get a set of shures, but you want the sound quality and benefits of that type of headphones. the sony 81's are worth every penny for 35 bucks, and you really can't find much better for that price.

I don't really mind spending $100 on shure but it better be fscking worth it. If you got a "killer deal" on the iPod then why didn't you sell it the moment you got it? Tape Deck adapter FTW.

Tape Deck adapter FTW.

i guess i just liked the idea of 60 gigs of music at my fingertips... and for the record, tape deck adapters suck...

Your last bit of information was useful, well I'd like to get the best of both worlds and total sound isolation sounds great although I plan to jog with these. I'll likely leave one phone out when jogging because I get paranoid and even open ear ones wouldn't be good enough (worries about a dude coming up from behind and killing me or what ever) and yes I know I'm paranoid about that.

well, i just bought myself a pair of sony mdr-ex81's... they're pretty good 'phones and the sound isolation is pretty nice... which is quite different from my sennheiser HD570's, which, don't get me wrong; sound great, but they're open air and can easily be heard by people other than me, so those are my "at-home" headphones. but my sony's, which replaced my sennheiser MX300 earbuds are awesome; the inside the ear formfactor is really nice because they're lightweight, stay put, and sound great. I use the bass booster eq setting on my ipod and the sound is just awesome. now granted, these aren't quite as good as the shures, but they also cost about half that of the cheapest shures (e2c). I got them from buy.com for thirty-something shipped... can't beat it.

How is it that you purchased sennheiser headphones and yet you use an iPod? Sheesh, I'm not sure if I should believe you that the sony 'phones sound alright...

that's no good either.... auxillary input or digital interface is the way to go

How much are you looking to spend. I would go for the Ety 6i, made for ipods actually. Very good for the price if you can find it <$100
