PLEASE when POST threads asking for input on system builds tell us...

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
I want to use it for gaming, but I also use it for regular stuff (budgeting, internet, etc...).

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread.
I want to spend less than $400 on the remaining parts.

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
USA

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.
Given what I read, I think Intel is the best bang for the buck.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
I have an ATI 9800 Pro AGP. Depending on what you say I may reuse this.
I also have an Antec PS, but it is pretty old.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.
Not really.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
Probably not OC - have two young kids and want to spend time with them.

Ideas? Thanks.

well if you want to game, the 9800pro agp is gonna have to go. You should go with an intel P35 board, intel chipset and stable board, you are right, intel is great. Pci express for the video card my friend, keep your old system together. You will have to start from scratch. a videocard will run you 150-250$ for todays games so there is half your budget.

I am a little confused. I don't understand your post.

I would like to spend the money on a board, chip, video card and RAM. I can probably make do with PS, HD, monitor and mouse/keyboard.

You'll need a new hard drive, since nearly all of the new motherboards only have one IDE channel. And you'll most likely need a new psu, since the new hardware has new connectors.

Processor-- E4500
Motherboard-- any of these will do just fine, pick one with features you want/need
Hard drive: you'll be happy with any of these
RAM: these will all work, also, although I'd personally get this A-Data, if I were in your situation.
Power supply: Antec EarthWatts 430

E4500: $127.99
motherboard ~$100
hard drive: $70-90
RAM: ~$50
PSU: $70

Now, that only leaves you ~$100 for a video card, but even this $90 7600GT is about twice as fast as your 9800 Pro, and this $133 X1950 Pro is about 50% faster than the 7600GT.
