Is there any hardware I can plug into my computer, and then insert a MINI DV tape into and transfer the media from the tape to the computer. Just like if I had the mini dv in a camera and plugged the camera into the computer and transfered it.

Yes. It's called a mini-DV camera.

Yikes. They seem to range from 500 dollars to 1500 and higher. Seems like you would be better off just having the camera and using that.
