I've just had to spend around £50 for Norton Internet Security 2005 of my PC and it hasn't even removed all the spyware programs (the odd 'Messenger' pop up still occurs)

I'm looking for (ideally) a good free download to install on my kids PC's

Anyone any advice please? Ideally it should remove ads too please

If you're getting Messenger pop-ups, you need a firewall, not just antivirus. Grab the free version of ZoneAlarm and see how that goes.

edit: although NIS does include a firewall. Maybe I'm misunderstanding your problem here? Also, if it's Win2000 or WinXP, try the free Microsoft AntiSpyware.

I don't think there's a "good" free one. You can try antivir, avast, or avg.
I'd highly recommend trying Kaspersky's trial version and staying away from Norton software. For Spyware, Webroot's Spysweeper is very good, then there's the free one from Microsoft.

In a do-it-yourself free suite I would recommend AVG for antivirus, Zone Alarm as your firewall and AdAware and Spybot to remove malware, spyware, etc.
