Before I bought my SBLive! X-Gamer, I had a Yamama XG-something gaming board, they called it...got it for like $15.00 at a computer show, but have seen them online for like $10.00 :) It worked well for me for over a year...

Yeah, SB Live is good, too good to put in a customers machine unless you know they're going to use it. Most business users can get away with much less. I've been using OEM Ensoniq PCI soundcards ($10-15 at shows/online) if I know the person isn't a big gamer.

The Live! Value is your best bet, but the Creative 128 thing that Rellik mentioned would also be great for someone who isnt going to be gaming much or at all.

Yeah, the SB Live value or the SB PCI128. I never had any problems with my PCI128. Usually, though, there is only a $15 to $20 difference in price between the two..

I'd say SB Live! Value for home user (playing games) and either a SB128 PCI or Ensoniq PCI for businesses/light home users.

I don't like Yamaha cards because I've seen a couple loose their volume after a year or two.

Creative is not supporting all of the PCI128 cards for Win2k. Mine has the 1370 chip, and they say they're not supporting that one with Win2k drivers. I don't understand why not, but it's something to consider when you buy your card.
