Well, I use a Logitech G35. Good quality headset. But you might define it as massive, it is well built and not very light. Sits fine etc. check it out!

thanks, i will check out the g35. BTW I noticed the attached mic. is it detacheable by any chance?

mostly first person shooters. No dedicated soundcard just the onboard z68 realtek stuff (is that bad?). I would like "surround sound" quality, but nothing too crazy. Budget under $100...

Not sure how much the G35 costs in the US, but it was 85 euros in The Netherlands. As for the sound card, with the G35 you won't need one as it is USB :) The mic isn't detachable, you just kind of slide it up, so you cant see it if you aren't on TS/Skype/vent. It has virtual 7.1 surround sound. You can hear reasonable well which general area somebody is (well at least in Call of Duty 4). It sounds absolutely fantastic in BF3, great audio stage (imho). You can turn it to stereo, but that sounds pretty bad. I just leave it on surround sound the whole time, dont see why you would want stereo (except for listening to music, which is also good with the surround sound, but if you want to listen to music in good stereo, this isnt for you). Check some other 'proper' reviews about it as I am just talking about my personal experiences. For me, after wearing it for very long periods of time, it does become a bit heavy/has a high pressure on your head. But this is only noticable after several hours of straight usage, I put it around my neck and turn it up and use it as a speaker and just put it back on :p Mic is very good too btw. Very clear, voice morph stuff is a nice bonus in the beginning, though it will start to irritate pretty fast lol.

Good luck finding your headset.

G35 is probably your best bet - hunt around and you should be able to get it under $100. Dolby Headphone isn't accurate by any means for most people but it is definitely better than stereo for supported games and the overall featureset / performance is good for the money. Sure, it won't stand up to a >$150 headphone in terms of audio quality but that's not the point. It *will* stand up to ~$100 closed headphones pretty well.

I would recommend the Medusa NX 5.1's, they come in both an USB version with build in soundcard and a version for use with a soundcard. I can vouch for the soundcard version.

The 'real' 5.1's aren't bad in terms of purely static location awareness (i.e. where targets don't move) but the need to pack in multiple drivers means that they're heavy, the need to have smaller main drivers compromises their audio performance, and that they still cant do 'front' any better than a stereo set. Unless you have freaky ears IMO virtual is the way to go.
