ok every year I buy the best consumer LCD screen to replace my CRT. every time they say will play games and show videos just as good as CRT. other comment on these products say they produce a better image than CRT. and every time they go right on ebay and I lose a couplehundred dollars as I stay with my CRT.

the last LCD I had was a Viewsonic VP930B-3 19in. It was supposed to be the king! I played NFS most wanted on it and you could see how degradded all the color was on each pixel. watching movies was the same terrible quality. not to mention there was no more smoothness to any motion. at the least, there wasn't any ghosting like the LCD's in '05. all it was good for was web surfing and reading a lot on the internet.

so are the LCD's of '07 have the same story? or are there any that are atleast as good as a CRT? I want a 21" Wide screen this time.

no LCD nuts please. thanks.

Not for somebody who claims to be able see how degradded all the color is on each pixel.
You obviously have magic eyes, stick with your CRT and laugh at the rest.

dell's 22inch widescreen is pretty good and fairly inexpensive but what crt do you have? If you have some cheap 17 or 19 inch crt I doubt you will have a problem with the dell, if you have a high end 21 or bigger crt that was over $1000 when released then you are not likley to be able to match its color reproduction without spending a lot of money.

If you are used to CRT's, LCD's will always look different to you no matter how good it is. That is because LCD's use a very different color display technology then CRT's resulting in different gamuts. Also the high brightness from the backlight and contrast will often look metallic to someone used to CRT's.

A big issue is pixel size or dot pitch. Many LCD's use a large dot pixel, often .25-.28 or sometimes even higher compared to the .20 or .22 of CRT's. This results in a grainier, blockier image to many people who notice. Another issue too is that LCD's are only at their best at max resolution, or native resolution. This is the max resolution the monitor is capable of. Anything else is interpolated, often resulting in a fairly blurry image, quality depends on the interpolation system, some brands/monitors are better than others of the same class. Unfortunatley running a LCD at it's clearest max resolution might be a bit much for a graphics card to handle on an intense video game, therfore resulting in lower resolution and interpolation for FPS gain.

they were playing a movie on their monitors? How was it connected, often for tv's at least they have a large number connected to the same source and most arent properly calibrated so its almost impossible to tell how they actualy look. Also if it was just a dvd then any 20-22 inch lcd will not look that good since the dvd is 720x480 and the lcds are 1600x1200, if you want to properly compare an lcd see if they have a 24inch (1900x1200) which can be connected to a blueray or hddvd player running something at 1080p (and make sure its directly connected not through some switch) that should give you a better idea of how the displays work in their native res.

Look through the various articles in the Video forum, thats where you should start.

I have the Samsung SyncMaster 225BW. I wanted a large display (22") low response time (5ms) for under $400.00. The Samsung fit the bill perfectly for me. Others will steer you away from the Samsung and any TN panel display - but remember it's your money. Figure out whats important to you and go in that direction.

heres what i think about response times for LCD's (_(_)

5ms WOW thats 200 times persecond.

my CRT is at 85hz at 1600x1200 thats 85000 times per second.

i better not hear no 'but you cant see more than 30 times persecond' or ull be shot dead

I'm a big FPS gamer (well was, don't have enough time anymore) and I just orderd a Dell 2407WFP because it was so damn cheap ($650 Canadian shipped) and my 19in CRT feels too small now. I'll post in this thread with my impressions as it's going to be my first LCD.

The ideal solution is a Sony FW900 24in 16:10 widescreen CRT. You can find refurbs for $400US shipped (to US address only though), but it weighs 95 pounds and you risk getting one with defects.
