Hey folks, planning to build myself a desktop in the next couple of months. I plan to use it predominantly for gaming, and I'd like something that will stay useful for the next few years.
I have a price range of optimally 1,000 to 1,200 dollars, but beyond that I have no real preconceptions. I intend to do some moderate overclocking, as well. This is what I've pieced together on my own, and I'd really appreciate advice or suggestions:

Motherboard: ASUS M4A78-E AM2+/AM3 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD 129.99
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 940 Deneb 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Black Edition 189.99
RAM: CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 55.00
Video Card: GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 169.99
PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W 79.99
Case: COOLER MASTER RC-690-KKN1-GP 79.99
HD: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 7200RPM 109.99
Optical Drive: LG Black 22X (CAV) DVD+R 24.99

At this point totals about $840 after rebates; still need a keyboard/monitor/speakers, but haven't given those much thought at this point (input is welcome).

Build looks pretty good. Just throw in an aftermarket cooler (if you are planning on overclocking) and you should be all set.

Are the C2Q's still faster clock for clock with the Phenom II's??? if so, i'd suggest an Intel Quad with a UD3R or P Gigabyte board. Q9550 would be nice. You can run 500fsb on the Gigabyte board, and run at max 4250Mhz or 4Ghz using the 8 multi. Real easy mobo to overclock, and I'd suggest a quad over a X3... Vista runs alot better on my quad than my wolfdale...

Ram of atleast 1000 or 1066

... the rest is on you

In that price range you could seriously go i7. Phenom 2 is truly only good if you already have an AM2 board. I remember reading Anandtechs article on the Phenom 2 x4's and truth be told, they compare with the chip i bought. Some (most) apps have the P2 higher, some apps my Q8200 at stock 2.33ghz beats it. Yikes huh?

I'm not recommending what i bought, but even it beats out what you have suggested while costing less $$.
