Freespace 2 open. It's heavily updated the graphic engines and really, it's well worth playing. It's free, as long as you have a copy of the original, available from Good Old games and other sources.

Playing X3 Terran Conflict right now.. I'd say it's a very good game - but it takes so long to really get started that it almost shoots itself in the foot. X3 lacks the atmosphere that Freelancer had.. But.. seems to be the best space-sim out right now.

Darkstar One.. good game.. boring too fast. Freelancer had a lot more to it.


Man.. I wish they could just make a goddamn space sim that actually felt like you were going a far distance or exploring something..

I've played both X2 and X3. Honestly, X3 is an improved version of X2. Practically everything about it is better - menus/UIs are more fluid, you can actually play with a mouse, combat is better, the engine is prettier/runs better, etc. I played X2 A LOT (at least 100 hours, probably more) and only got an M6 (frigate, biggest "personal" ship), a TL (huge transport ship), some fighters, and a few factories. There are tons of guides on the games - playing it really feels like a career.

They're truly great games, but be prepared to spend a lot of time to learn the game and to get anywhere. Oh, and the story lines kind of suck. Seriously, the "Khaak"?

I haven't touched the main plot in a long time. I left it when you're supposed to land on a Split station but you have to gain their favor first.

I'm up to about 10 factories now. I love watching the $ roll in.


I figure once I get into playing X3 I'll be done with X2, which is why I'm playing out X2 first.

It took me longer to get bored of Darkstar One than it did Freelancer.

Freelancer compelled me to play on and on and then suddenly, the game finished and its lack of depth as a space game really told.

DarkStar One had me playing but not to the degree whereby I completed it in 3 days (like Freelancer). Gameplay and graphics-wise it was so very similar but didnt have that pull that made me rush through it.

Both were good games. Played them through twice or more... looking especially snazzy on a 42 or 47 inch screen.
