I have the 1st edition of Windows 98 (ver 4.10.1998). But I noticed recently that to upgrade certain software, I need the Windows 98 SE version of this O/S. Yet I have gone to Windows Update several times, let it scan my PC, and yet this component for upgrade won't appear? Is this Second Edition 'patch/Service Pack' available to users of Windows 98 1st Edition?. What I'm looking for is to Download it for FREE of charge. I have a very high speed DSL line, so I don't really need to go and buy the CD update version.

The Last thing I want to do is to give them Bastards in Redmond any more of my money so they can mail me CD bulk rate and have it get here in 6-8 weeks, and of course, all for the privilage of making Bill $19.95 richer when I can just download the update, only if I knew where?

Can you help. Thanks a lot.

you would have to pay to upgrade to 98 SE, they are "differant OSes" as far as microsoft is concerned.

if you are looking to spend the $50 to upgrade you should consider XP Home.

On a more serious, and legal, note, it was already mentioned that Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE are seperate and different OSes and there is no way to "patch" 98 to 98 SE, so you'll have to bite the bullet and give Bill some of your cash. I also suggest Windows XP as it should run almost all Windows 98 software. I have had nothing but good experiences (luck?) getting even DOS games to run under WIndows XP Pro.

To be honest you can get windows xp home cheaper then windows 98se and if you can get a oem copy you will get it even cheaper.

In retail you can get windows xp home upgrd (same as the full version but you just need the 98 cd to tell the setup that you have bought a windows before) for around 99 bucks unless the price has droped. The full version is prob more I dun know exactly. However if you can get a oem full version most of the time you can get this for just 88 bucks.
