I have an antec sonata II. The stock tricool exhaust fan on it has the following three cfm/db ratings...
39/25
56/28
79/30
but I saw this fan on newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835226013
90/18!
Its quieter than my tricool on low (very happy with the sound it creates there, which is supposedly 25db...), yet passes more air than it on high (which is very loud).
My questions:
1. is this possible? Are these reliable specs?
2. Should I ditch my tricool for this fan @ $24?

No, there's no way possible to get 90 CFM at only 19dBa. Most of the crappy and loud fan manufacturers lie about the specs.

Don't waste your money.

My suggestion? Pick up a few 120mm Yate Loons for ~$3-4/each -- they are just as quiet as the Tri-cool on the lowest setting, but push just a little bit more air through.

hmmm. I was only going to spend any money for more air at a much discounted noise level. I posted another topic about placement of my ac64 freezer in my case, and feel like the answers I get on both threads will dictate my action on the other.... catch 22...

Okay, here's the deal...

Fan noise follow the laws of physics... which laws I don't know... after all, this isn't a college white paper, but...

I can tell you from personal experience that moving a LOT of air requires fan blades to 'slap' the air, and this 'slapping' is what you're hearing!

I don't care if you're talking about an airplane propeller, an air conditioner, or a computer case fan. There's just no getting around it! ;)

What Blue Weasel is telling you is the truth. When liars figure, figures lie! These liars are probably taking the reading from 3 metres away, or something.

There's no free lunch when it comes to fan noise! If you wanna move air, and lots of it, the fan is going to produce noise! There's no magical way around it...

I purchased one of those 90cfm/18db fans from SilenX and it's HUGE compared to the normal 72cfm/14db and it's 1.5x's as thick 38mm vs 25mm. I personally have all of the 72cfm model in my TJ09 and it's pretty frickin quiet and there's PLENTY of air flow going on.

SilenX has been known for overstating their dB ratings and the quality of the fan itself hasn't been commensurate with the price. I think you can find some tests of that fan around the web by now. SPCR recently did another group - the SilenX they tested came nowhere near spec even on CFM (there is only one way to measure CFM).

The base dB (noise floor) of most silent rooms is in the teens of dB. You'd have to be measuring in a special noise-proof room to get anywhere near that number and that just isn't anywhere near real world. And as usual, they never mention how they got that number. SilenX has always been hinky and don't look like they've changed their spots any.
