Looking for eMachines W4605 Audio Drivers

Howdy all! First off, I hope this is the proper forum for this (was torn between tech support and software...) so please lemme know if it's not.

For Christmas, I received an eMachines W4605 laptop (the one from walmart before they picked up the new Turion-based machine). Everything was cool until one day I made a mistake.

I decided "BAH! Who needs that crappy little 5GB restoration partition? They gave me a restore CD, surely it will have the drivers loaded onto it, right?" WRONG. Dead Wrong. Wiped the restoration partition, installed ubuntu, got tired of ubuntu, killed winXP by destroying grub (smooth, eh? that's what we call a lack of foresight)...and now I have all my drivers except for USB2.0 and my audio.

Supposedly my sound card is a Conexant SmartAMCI CX20468-31 but DriverGenius lists it as a straight-up RealTek AC'97 chip. Tried the RealTek drivers to no avail and I absolutely cannot find any drivers (google, driverguide, windrivers, bittorrent, etc) that will install under the Conexant name.

Yes, I've tried contacting eMachines and they informed me that since I messed with the partition layout, I'm SOL. Thanks, guys...need two files and you tell me to ah heck off...oh well. I've also tried various methods of uninstalling the ATI Southbridge drivers and reinstalling them along with uninstalling/reinstalling the audio drivers (RealTek).

I'm at a complete loss and bow down before the greatness that is ATTS. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be eternally grateful and may even do something odd in your name (like tell one of my customers at Kroger that our store sucks and they could do better elsewhere). Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I forgot to mention I've also tried Gateway's file on this subject

Someone else did the same thing you did, and they eventually found that these were the proper drivers: (They say they are for a Gateway laptop, but Gateway owns Emachines now, and therefore undoubtedly has parts that are common to both brands.)

Here's the readme file. Pay attention where the files in this winzip self-extractor will be unzipped:

File Description: Gateway(r) Conexant Audio Driver
Version: 6.14.10.0585
Operating System: Microsoft(r) Windows(r) XP
Part Number: 9533121
Date: 09/16/2005

Installation

After you have downloaded and double-clicked the file (9533121.exe), files self-extract and copy into the C:\Cabs\9533121 folder on the hard drive.

1. From the Start menu, click Run.

2. In the Run dialog box, type: C:\Cabs\9533121\HFXSetup.exe. Click OK.

3. The driver automatically loads in the background.

4. New hardware is automatically detected.

5. Installation is complete.

------------------

Now, if the HFXSetup.exe doesn't work for you, install the drivers manually by going into Device Manager and find the sound section or unknown device section and update the drivers by pointing the device to the c:\Cabs\9533121 folder. Force it to accept, if you need to.

Slikkster, thanks for the reply but I've already tried that file and it fails to install. If I try to search by a specific location/folder via Device Manager, it attempts to reinstall the drivers from RealTek...blah...

You're not installing correctly. Do it this way:

Update Driver
Next
Install from a List or Specific Location
Next
Don't Search. I will choose the driver to Install
Next
Have Disk
Next
Browse (browse to the c:\Cabs\9533121 folder)
OK

This will force it to use the drivers in the folder 9533121 folder.

Oh my...I can't believe I neglected to do it that way *slaps self with a salmon...*

Thank you so unbelievably much for your help. This has been giving me a headache for about a month or more now. Thank you...I owe you
