<< If your modem is V90, you can use the generic modem drivers that come with XP. >>

Not all V.90 modems can work with Windows XP generic drivers, I have the U.S.R. Performance Pro modem which is a 56k v.90 modem, and when I installed it Windows would definitely give it generic drivers, but right after that an error would come up saying hardware installation failed. It's probably because the modem has special features. I've been too lazy to call U.S.R. up and ask them what the hell is up, they have this modem scheduled for a v.92 upgrade download soon, but no Windows XP drivers......Why would they continue to support it but not get off their bum and make Windows XP drivers for it?

Barring that, the zoom modem from newegg works fine with xp home, like 22 plus shipping i think.

I have an Archtek Smartlink Software Modem based on the ESS series chip, and it works very well under XP. I got mine from CompUSA some time ago for, believe it or not, $4.88. It out performs my USRobotics Hardware Modem by a significant amount.

I finally got xp to love my Intel HaM modem. They're cheap ($8 or so on Pricewatch), performance seems to be ok and xp drivers are on Intel's web site.
