I've been using a 2009-era asus netbook (1005ha) for the past 4 years for general office tasks (mostly MS word/internet) and it's served me well. But by now the battery barely holds a charge, the WiFi card is unreliable, etc. So I'm in the market for something new.

I don't do any gaming or hardware-intensive stuff. Nothing but office applications and occasionally watching movies.

The only major complaints I had about the netbook:

Screen resolution is too low. When I'm working on a word doc or browsing the internet, I have to constantly scroll around.

Traditional hard disk instead of SS My girlfriend's macbook air with an SSD boots up in an instant..no HD rumbling/loading, etc. I want an SSD!

I've got an iPad and was hoping I could get a keyboard for it and just go down to one device (a dream of mine!) but unfortunately it just doesn't seem feasible based on my research. And since I've already got the iPad, I'm having a hard time with the idea of buying another expensive tablet (i.e. Windows tablet) that COULD do that (plus I think they're expensive).

Can anyone point me in the right direction? The landscape has changed a lot since I last researched.

-High quality/res screen (not necessarily the best, but better than my current netbook's awfui 1024x600) from 12" - 14"
-SSD -- doesn't have to be too big -- I use dropbox/cloud storage.
-solid build quality -- I want this to last me a long time!
-long battery life is good, but not terribly important.
-would like to keep it under $500, but that's not set in stone.

TIA for any/all advice.
