One of my friends has an Asus A8N-E and the chipset fan is going bad (screeching noise). I would like to find an online guide to fan replacement (with pics).

I have not seen the board. Can this fan be replaced from the top, without having to work underneath the motherboard?

Also, I would welcome make/model suggestions for a replacement fan that would be a drop-in fit.

Thanks

Dear Bernard,

here is the replacement fan, three bucks at the Asus e store:

However, your friend might consider replacing the NB fan with a passive cooler: quieter, and, can't wear out.

Lots of folks have used the Zalman NB-47:

About $5 plus shipping, unless you can buy locally.

About $20, but pure copper:

These are the instructions for a NB cooler that apparently does not fit on the A8N, but, you can get an idea of how to do it:

http://www.enzotechnology.com/manuals/cnb_r1.pdf

After cutting the push pins on the current NB fan, be gently pulling it off--very gently loosen it up, being careful not to chip the edge of the chip, and so that you don't pull off the actual NB chip itself: it does not have an integrated cooler/metal cover on it like CPUs do now. The thermal compound can get sort of baked on, and make it stick tight, so be gentle....the northbridge chip itself is a bit fragile.

HTH,

Thanks NXIL. That's very useful. So by cutting the existing pins, there is no need to remove the motherboard, as the new heatsink installs from above?

I really like the Enzotech CNB-S1
