OK, I need to build a new PC, and I haven't looked at hardware in about 3-4 years (aka a lifetime). I don't need an overly speedy rig, just a solid PC for web browsing and very light gaming. After looking over the recommendations that are stickied at the top of the forum, the following is what I am thinking of building:

What I have:
-Antec 1040B case (PSU is burned out)
-Klipsch Promedia 2.1s
-Wireless mouse ad keyboard
-A parallel ATA HD and CD burner

What I plan on purchasing:
-PSU CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817139005
-CPU AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Brisbane 2.7GH http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819103210
-Mobo ASUS M3A78-EMH http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813131273
-RAM mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820146731
-Monitor Acer AL2216Wbd http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16824009094
-A copy of 64 bit Vista

I will also probably get a new HD http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16822136218
and a new CD/DVD burner http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16827151173

As you can see, basically all my hardware is off the recommended list from the stickied post. If anyone thinks something should be changed, let me know. Also, I will be purchasing a wireless adapter (I don't feel like running a Cat5e cable to my PC), so suggestions for that would be great. I also might get a new USB flash-drive...

EDIT: Looking at getting a UPS. How does this look: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16842101311 ?

Looks like you have most everything you need. Are you going to use the onboard video or get a card? That would be the one question I would have. Also the PSU you have picked is probably overkill with this system. If you can save a few bucks you might as well. Of course if you do want to upgrade later to a more powerful machine you would have that capability with that PSU.

Onboard video. I can pick up a card later if I want to play real games.

Rogue, does the e2180 outperforma a 2.7ghz Athlon 64? I'm not sure, I always thought c2d held a 25% clock advantage over K8, but 2.0ghz means it's a 2.5ghz K8 cpu. But the AMD cpu has more cache.

Depends on how much you overclock the E2180. It seems most can oc to 2.8 to 3.0 pretty easily from what I read. I think stock the AMD is faster is most benchmarks.

650W is way more than you need.

If you don't anticipate adding more than a low-end gaming card you're fine with a 400-450W PSU.

Adding two things to this:
-I want a UPS to provide an even better buffer against the crappy power service we have here in NE Ohio. See edit in original post.
-The two PCI slots in that motherboard are 32-bit, right?

Cheaper and better performance. Plus you can easily overclock the E2180 quite considerably.
Not only is your setup slower, but it lacks onboard video.

Fail.

I took into account the fact that it can be overclocked to around 3GHz when I said better performance, and deliberately did not include onboard video to account for the fact that the OP said "very light gaming" for which I'd at least get a low-end video card.

So next time please actually contribute to the thread instead of leaping to conclusions and passing judgement and not making any helpful suggestions yourself. Thanks.
