Looking for comments on northbridge fans for DFI Lanparty and Asus...

I was considering the latest asus nf4 board (sli premium) but I highly doubt I will ever take advantage of SLI. So these other boards have fans instead of heatsinks...how is the noise level? My pcis pretty quiet now and I'm not liking the fact that I would be adding another fan to the mix.

if you have been experimenting with silent computing for a while, you probably already know that cheaply made, OEM 40mm could become the loudest single components in a case. heck, even if it was a decent fan, 60mm or smaller fans are loud by nature, just because of the ridiculous RPM that they spin at.

of course, it is assumed that you already were thinking about replacing it with a passive sink. zalman, perhaps?
but there is another $20, and it could even involve a little modding.

decisions, decisions...

i hope you find an answer to this. I have found that reviews of mobos never seem to mention such mundane details such as chipset fan, and when they do, its with useless terms like "pretty quiet". sure, it's pretty quiet... with 4 wd raptors buzzing, while burning a DVD and using 4 tornado case fans at 12v. i bet some users at SPCR would know.

yes zalman has one that will fit. i forget if you need to mod it or anything.

the key to the chipset is case air flow. i run the stock fan with AS5 at 2000 rpm constant. idle temp is 40, load 45 and highest i've seen is 48c on a really hot day here.

more rpms don't help the temp, just makes it louder.

The DFI fan has the potential to be very loud; when you start the computer and it revs all the fans all the way up, you can hear it above all the other fans. It doesn't seem that loud to me in normal use, although I don't pay attention to sound much and my computer isn't the quietest one ever made.

gah. i rather not remove the fan. for the cost and labor, i might as well throw in ~25 more to get that Asus NF4 premium board with the heat pipe. Just seems like a waste as I doubt I would ever take advantage of SLI. decisions decisions 🙂

thanks for the info guys.

well, its 2 pins you push through the back of the board, use a little rubbing alcohol to take off the TIM and apply some as5, push it back on. done.

its really easy when the board is new, out of the case, bare. its a pita when its all loaded up and you have to pull it.

anyway, the asus looks niice, i might get one for my brother because he thinks he needs 3 pci slots.

me i'm getting an ultra d to go with my sli-dr 😉
