Hello.

I am trying to decide what printer model to buy and am confused when looking at the Hewlett Packard line.

I just want something that is similar in specification to the Canon IP4200/4300 and the IP5200/5300.

I require it to have separate ink cartridges for each color, so yellow, cyan, magenta all in their own cartridge as well as black. Somewhere around 4 to 5 ink cartridge range.

If you want something similar to the ip4200/4300----why not get a ip4200/4300?---which will give you roughly half of the consumable costs compared to a similar HP OEM cartridges to OEM
cartridges. Even if the ip4200/4300 have the curse of the chip---they are all doing it now including HP. But for those of us with the foresight to buy non-chipped Canons---we will have that ha ha until eventually ours crap out and we are in the same boat.---but the chipped Canons can be refilled with the same ease as the non-chipped Canons---its the hassle of over-riding the chip and doing your own ink level monitoring that are the only drawbacks.

And for photoprinting---a five color printer with the resulting photoblack is better than making black by mixing the three primary colors.

Actually I want the IP4300, but I want to consider all my options right now. I have been using Canon all my life and just want to see how they stack up in reference to their competition right now.

So that's why I want to see what HP has to offer, I really would prefer to stick to Canon, but I wanna see what the other options are ya know.

If you plan to use your printer until the print head wears out, how much does a replacement head cost for HP vs 4200/4300? Tom's Hardware has some tests from last December that still apply. At least HP now has some units that have separate ink tanks, but don't expect to find one for $90. shipped like the iP4300 has been from Newegg/ChiefValue... Besides, the Canons have a reasonably straight paper path as well as a U-shaped one while HP still has only the latter. And you may find that your HP comes with "starter" ink tanks that have lower ink volume than the replacements have. And that is the main reason I won't buy HP - even if they finally get the feature set right.

But the closest you can get to Canon in an HP are the ones like the Photosmart 8250 (discontinued but still out there) or 7160. But these are photo printers more comparable to the iP6700. IDK if any of their general purpose printers (the Deskjet line) have any lower end models with separate ink tanks. That would be more comparable to the iP4300.
