I'm looking for a laptop for my mom, all she is going to use it for is for email and watching movies. so I am looking for a cheap laptop that will meet those demands.

I don't even know where to start with laptops, I don't even know what brands are good.

Also she knows nothing of mac and is scared of new stuff so macs are out of the question.

Thank you.

No Macs, eh?

I strongly reccomend a refurbished or de-comissioned Thinkpad. For under $500, you can get a used T41 with a 1.4ghz-1.6ghz Pentium M and 512mb of RAM, with a ~1yr Lenovo warranty. I own one myself, and am impressed with the quality - they're very reliable, and will cause a minimum of headaches.

QFT. I have a thinkpad from way back in 2000(!!!) and have never had any problems with it.

Do be sure you get one with enough ram, though. Thinkpads are the most picky computers I have ever used when it comes to ram.
