Once again this is another best of the best questions for you all. I'm willing to spend about $200 for a CD-RW burner. I have a cable modem and feel that without a cd burner I'm not getting the whole package. I've read about the new Plextor 12x10x32 but I'm not sure if that's the best. Please help. It's gonna go on a system with 1GHz, 256MB RAM, 20GB HD, 32MB Graphics, 17" Monitor, all with Cox @Home Digital Internet. And I wanted to say that there will always be FREE music, even if they shut down napster, damned commies. Thanks, just asking for some opinions on the best CD-RW burners.

I installed the TDK Velocd 12x10x32 on saturday. It's great. Most reviews give it the edge over the Plextor (same exact machine) because of the software package and extras. Probably anything with burnproof would do the trick for you though. :)

I've got the Plextor you mention and it's excellent. It's now available in 16X of course, as is the counterpart from Yamaha, but without burnproof I think. In my opinion, if you choose a Plextor, Sony Yamaha or Ricoh, then either will serve you equally well. Of course, if you want/need burnproof, then the Plextor is the biz....¨

Thank you all very much for the input. Just have one question: how much did you pay for yours? Both of you guys.

After the $30 buy.com coupon, the $50 TDK rebate (still waiting) the $10 TDK cdr rebate (you can get the burner in a package with 50 free cdr's. Somehow I got the rebate for those as if I had bought them.)and ebates, I think it was like $170 something.

It's $226.95 at buy.com now. I think there is a $30 off $150 and ebates gives you another 3% back.

I recommend anything with burnproof. They work great! I got my Iomega 12x10x32 for $99 from the CompUSA deal.

Got mine (The TDK VeloCD) at about $160. But that's after rebates and coupons.

You should still be able to get it under $200.

I just ordered the Plexwriter 16/10/40a for $283 shipped from Icompz.com. I had a Creative CDRW I've hated since I got it. It finally pooped out on me. I was a PC newbie when I bought it. Now I would only buy Plextor and TDK. For those who say that TDK=Plexwriter; They may be made from the same parts but the specs on the Plex are probably tighter. If you check the review sites the Plexwriter's surpass TDK's performance substantially. I had a freind that worked for Philips/ magnavox. Simple things like resisters were tested for quality. The best ones went toward their best line, and worst toward a whole other brand they manufactured for.

I have a Plextor 12/10/32a and have no coasters whatsoever and no problems making "personal backups" of protected CD. It also has very fast DAE (Digital Audio Extraction)
You might opt for one of the Cheaper Plextor Clones as some have mentioned here.
