Considering a new CD player. Can anyone suggest one?

Features I'm interested in:

- ~5 CD changer
- SACD
- Programmable (tell it once which songs you like in which order on a CD, it remembers)
- General good quality per good reviews, good sound; good value.

I already use a PS3 for blu-ray, so not really looking for a DVD/CD player.

Come to think of it, can the PS3 be used if hooked up to stereo, but not SACD?

Not locked into a brand.

Are you averse to going the used route? A quick check of Crutchfield shows their cheapest SACD capable player to be over $1000. That's ridiculous IMHO given that within the last 10 years you could walk into Best Buy and pick one up for well under $500.

you almost have to go used/refurb on these as it seems no one makes them anymore or they cost an absurd amount of money because of who still makes them. This has to do with the fact that SACD and DVD-A never really caught on in the consumer market and now just sits in the audiophile market so they can charge out the nose for it

you want to look for a Sony SCD-CE595 or a Yamaha DVD-C950

bunch of the Sony's on ebay

You could also try asking on AVS see if they know of something thats is out there and affordable

I'm open to used/refurb, I just had a bad experience where I got one, waited months to hook it up and it was DOA, too late for warranty.

I'll take a look at what you mentioned. I also might need to give up SACD if it's not reasonably available, just seemed nice to get.

This was more narrowing down recommendations of the many models.

Depending on which generation PS3 you have it already supports SACD.

IIRC, only the 60gb and 80gb premium models featured SACD support. Those models are getting rarer now due to hardware failure.

I checked eBay and there are DVD players with SACD support for around $100-$150.

EDIT: What did you get Craig?

I'm curious as to what actually sells more: SACD/DVD-A or vinyl. I don't think I've ever seen SACDs in a record store.
I'm sure its vinyl. People are deaf and stupid so why would they pay $25 for a "CD"?

That said, I have lots of vinyl. I considered getting into SACD/DVD-A a while back but decided I didn't want to invest in yet another format.

High def lossless digital audio, FLAC, WAV, Etc., is probably a better investment at this point unless you already have a bunch of SACDs.

Edit: Regarding the PS3, unless you plan on having it hooked up to a monitor it seems like it would be a pain to use, a typical CD player has an LCD display PS3 has nothing, you have no way of knowing what track is playing or if the player is set to shuffle or repeat or something else without a monitor.

IIRC even these models downmix SACD to go out over the spdif out. There were very few players that supported SACD properly over HDMI.

My Denon DVD player supports SACD output properly over DenonLink and lets my receiver do bass management and EQ on the SACD signal (Something that is usually lacking with Multichannel analog input on a receiver, which you were then forced to do on the player)

I still listen to Thriller on SACD from time to time, but unless you already have a library of SACDs I'd personally skip that feature.

I don't think it will downmix unless you use SPDIF. I'm pretty sure it won't downmix over HDMI, but I could be wrong.

I know that's how it works for the high bitrate DTS and DD formats.

I know the bitrate is more than enough, I just think I remember reading that that was the only way that the PS3s supported it for some reason. I can go home and give it a shot as I have one of the compatible PS3s.

I still think it downmixes to DD over HDMI for some reason, but I will check.

I shouldn't have impulse purchased this probably.

I went to e-bay and searched for sacd and this came up with 12 minutes left and no bids - Denon DVD2200 for $99.99 with claimed light use in a second home theatre setup.

Gave me a few minutes to google it; I don't need the DVD, but it plays SACD. Which I'm not super interested in, it'd just bug me a bit not having it wondering how it'd sound.

I saw positive reviews. I saw it used to sell for $600 several years ago.

I gave up the multi-disc. And rushing I gave up the program feature that I wanted.

Which is a bit embarrassing to have listed all that in my question then not get it.

So, waiting for it to arrive and be a high-quality CD player with compromises.

I should have taken more time and looked for the one I described, oh well.

I did look at the ones suggested before going to e-bay.
