looking for camera for my little girl for Christmas

Homerboy

Lifer
She's 5yrs old so I don't want to spend overly too much.
I'd like it to have a flash and a digital view finder. Any recommendations anyone?
Anyone have any point and shots for sale?

by digital view finder do you mean a rear LCD or do you mean one of those tiny portals you squint into?

Simple, decent image quality, enough for you to make 8x10's of her pics if she wants, and a few features but won't overly confuse her, and won't be a "toy" camera. Kids are smart, they know ^_^. $99 dollahh.

Nikon's Digital SLRs are great, but their point and shoots have been very, very average at best.

For $99.99 you cannot do better than the Panasonic Lumix LZ8.

The combination of features and image quality at this price range is unbeatable. It's very beginner-friendly with its easy to use Intelligent Auto mode, but also offers features that you would be hard-pressed to find in cameras costing twice, even three times as much. Examples: 5x Leica lens with optical image stabilization, full manual mode, 2.5 FPS burst shooting, 848x480 movie recording, and it runs on AA batteries so there are no expensive lithium ion batteries for her to lose 🙂

You can get a cheap Sanyo or the like at Walmart and maybe save $20, but the Panasonic is the way to go if you want a camera that will be good for anyone (you, her, etc).

If $100 seems like a bit too much, then I would advise just looking on Craigslist and finding a nice used Canon powershot or Panasonic Lumix to give. Sometimes you can find decent, slightly used cameras for <$50.

I don't remember the brand, but I saw a commercial on TV for a line of kid-proof cameras and camcorders, made especially for children. Waterproof and specially-designed to be drop-resistant. I'd suggest calling Toys R Us and asking, they'd probably know right off the bat. And I remember it having a digital viewfinder on the back.

Thanks for the input everyone.... any input on possibly just finding some 1-2year old point and shoot on ebay for $50? recommendations for any older models?

I actually picked up a Canon Powershot a470 on clearance at Sears about a week ago for $64. Obviously ymmv, but they had several other cameras - including a Kodak and a Sony and some Aiptek's - all for under $90 as well. Probably worth a trip to your local Sears to see if they have any clearance items you can take advantage of.

I don't know how much they go for used but Ricoh made some bombproof ruggedized cameras for hard living. The cameras are sold under the Caplio series. They feature big easy to use buttons and are water/dust proof and rubber coated to absorb shocks.

Just saw an ad for something called the Little Shots digital camera w/ still and video for $30. Holds up to 120 photos, USB.

There are a few "cute" kids cameras on Amazon. The Fisher Price Kid Tough Digital Camera for Girls retails for $141.99. You're lucky she's a girl! The (same?) camera in blue is $157.99. Of course, the blue camera also comes with 20 free prints. AND, the blue cameras 8MP built in memory holds sixty 640x480 pictures. The girls version only holds fifty 640x480 pictures on its 8MP internal memory. 😛

Huge range in prices for the kids cameras. Personally, I've found that when you give a kid a useful object that looks like a toy, they treat it like a toy. If you give them something that looks more like the grown-up version, they tend to treat it a little bit better. I'd go with a used 3MP camera; Canon, Nikon, or Fuji (I'm sure there are some other equally valid suggestions for used cameras.) That is, if your daughter would be able to treat it carefully enough.

Just a glance through ebay, I saw quite a few used Fuji FinePix cameras. As I had an old one, 1.3MP, I think, I just narrowed the search down to those (out of the 10's of thousands of cameras on ebay.) Watch out for non-working cameras; read the descriptions carefully!
