I am looking for the latest and greatest Blu Ray player for around 100$ for a gift this year. I am out of the loop when it comes to this... i could stretch the price a little bit, no problem.

Thanks for your time

Looking at Wal-Mart these two are in your budget and have Wifi built in:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Magnavox-MBP5120F-F7-Blu-ray-Player/15080510 which has only Vudu and no Netflix.

This model has both: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Magnavox-MBP5130-F7-Wireless-LAN-Blu-ray-Player-with-Vudu-Wi-Fi/15080513

At Best Buy:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Insigni...ayer/9892472.p?id=1218195518665&skuId=9892472 which has Netflix, Pandora & Cinema Now.

and http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Insigni...ayer/9386103.p?id=1218096448903&skuId=9386103

You need some form of online for Blu-Ray. So if the modem is far away then consider a Powerline Network kit or Wireless. ;)

I have a bunch of DVDs ripped to my pc for back-up. How could i play them on my TV from the other room?

What would the Wi-Fi be for? Wouldn't an Ethernet port work better ?

Do you have a PS3 or XBOX360? I play all my movies on my computer to the PS3, and it is VERY easy.

DLNA

As for the original question, it depends what it needs to do. Just play discs with the best build quality/reliability? Stream Netflix? Stream other services like Hulu+? Stream stuff from a server/PC?

Panasonic DMP-65K currently on sale at Sears for $99; does this fit the criteria?

New HDTV owner, no BluRay player yet, so no pretense of expertise.

Great player for discs (reliable, no quirks), does Netflix but for Instant Queue only (others let you browse), no DLNA, no built-in wireless.

Yes Ethernet would work better. I was saying if the modem was far away. Then either Wireless or Powerline would be a good alternative. However both can be problematic.

If you don't know or want to troubleshoot Wi-Fi then stick with Ethernet if you can.

You will need a Blu-Ray player with DLNA like said above or a set-top box or game console.

The Roku DVP doesn't do DLNA right now however does file sharing if you setup a server on your PC. Which sells for as low as $60.

I didn't check the models I posted if they support DLNA. The PS3 is normally $300. However if you look around online you'll find some bundle deals. Bravia internet video is coming soon which is Sonys set of apps for there Blu-Ray players. Skype might be coming? If you plan to play games too. Not a bad investment.

All current LG and Samsung models do DLNA. I think all current Sonys do as well, though they're somewhat more format-limited (but any modern PC can transcode SD on the fly via PS3MediaServer or the like).

Just play Blu Ray, DVD, discs as well as other formats, and i'd probably just watch movies from my PC to my HDTV. My PC is in one room my TV is in another.

One thing I didn't like about the LG 370v is that is boots up really really slow and navigating through the menu options is painfully slow. I know this is an older model but do the newer BD players still have the same problem? And or does the LG I bought for my family member have a firmware update?

Still looking to purchase one as tomorrow I need to get my other family member a BD player - one that will be able to play ripped/backed-up DVD's and Blu Ray from his PC to the TV in the other room.. thanks again all :)

I am a big fan of panasonic Blu-ray players. They are known for having higher end quality playback and dvd upconverting. I have the DMP-BD60, which is like a basic end model. I bought that last year for $125. Now of course you can find newer blu-ray players with more features for under that price. Still, panasonic blu-ray players are great.
