I recently purchased a Tyan Tiger mobo along with two T'bird 1Gig chips. I did a minimum setup - out of the case - the two cpu's w/hsf, Gainward GF2 Pro/450, 2 sticks of ECC Registered (256) ram from Crucial, and a 420W AMD approved PS.
Before I begin, YES!!, T'bird chips will work in a dual AMD setup for those that are wondering.
When I powered the board up, the two CPU fans went on, the fan on the vid card went on, but the system would not post. Nothing on the monitor.
I did a lot of fiddling with the memory chips, tried another vid card, reset the cmos, etc. etc. etc. Still could not get the board to post.
While doing this fiddling I removed all of the memory and the vid card. Reset the bios. Powered up the board with only the two cpus w/hsf. The fans went on. I left the board run overnight. When I got up the hsf's were still running, the heatsink itself was warm....the bottom of the mobo under the cpu's was also warm.
The questions:
1. Will a mobo power up with only the cpu and hsf attached? I was under the impression that a mobo needed some ram and a vid card installed in order to power on.
2. Can I presume that since the hsf's worked and the heatsink and the mobo were both warm, that the two cpu's were recognized by the mobo and were working properly?
3. Is it possible for the fan on a vid card to work, but have something else wrong with it that will cause it not to work - thereby not posting?
Any input will be greatly appreciated.
