I just recently watched Afro Samurai and Sword of the Stranger and I was really impressed with the art style and story. I'm curious what else out there compares to it. I've heard Samurai X (or is it Samurai 7) is pretty good. I saw a couple eps of Samurai Champloo awhile back and I thought that was kind of cool. I might go back and check for the entire series. It's something about anime set in past times with samurai and ninja that just pulls me in every time.

Since I'm fishing for suggestions, anyone else like Genndy Tartakovsky? I like everything he's worked on so far, even Dexter's Lab and Powerpuff Girls are great. But I really loved Samurai Jack and Star Wars Clone Wars. I just wish he had some new projects coming up soon. Are there any other anime's with his type of art style? What's good in the world of american anime? I'm assuming that's what some of Genndy's projects would be classified under.

Finally one last recommendation request. I would love to find more anime along with lines of Death Note. That was such a good run, I hated that it was over so soon.

Out of the anime you've mentioned I only have Sword of the Stranger, and it's on my backlog. So for that stuff I can't really make a recommendation.
For the American stuff, I loved Dexter's Lab and Powerpuff Girls, and one day intend to watch Samurai Jack. Didn't know about Clone Wars. For American anime the only thing that really comes to mind is Avatar. But I wouldn't say it is similar to what Genndy has done.

they don't really closely match any of the points you've drawn on before, but some excellent animes include:

Bakemonogatari
Code Geass (main char is actually similar to Light in death note)
Eden of the East
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Gankutsuou (count of monte cristo in anime form. beyond death note levels of intrigue and plots. set in a sort of victorian punk future.)
katanagatari (set in past, has samurai...but all similarities end there.)
Spice and Wolf

if you're looking for something similar to power puff girls, then try panty and stocking. i didn't like it, but you might.

Panty and stocking is awful. Skip it.
I liked Eden of the East though.

Crayon Shin Chan has an awesome art style and animation, I'm not up at all on different types of Anime, but I like how it looks. Cheap but cool at the same time.

Ninja Scroll (movie version)
Samurai X
Samurai Deeper Kyo

Maybe:
Bleach
Moribito -- very good, but too slow-paced for some people

another mildly interesting anime might be twelve kingdoms.

some of the arcs are horribly boring and make you want to yell at the screen, but some are really good.
