Looking for an short IDE extension cable

exactly how long you need it to be?
I do not know what yea can do, but here is what I found..
http://www.cablestogo.com/product_list.asp?cat%5Fid=405
that way you can make your own IDE cable, waaay cheaper too
another route is buying a longer IDE cable but those get pretty pricy as well. I guess the better route is to make your own 🙂 I hope I was some help.
if not im sure others here will find something 😀

Thanks. I really need 6-10". This is for a little pet project, not for actually exending my IDE cables in my PC.

My original post is not clear. I need an actual extension cable with a male connector and female one. It's for a small project and will not be used for actually extending an IDE device inside a PC.

Take a regular 40-pin (old style) IDE cable like This - heck you may have one in your junk box. Cut off the end that you don't want flush with the side of the end connector - I use a SHARP slicing knife in a rocking chop motion. Or you can use a pair of side cutters - just be careful not to short any pairs.

Then get a couple of these: dual row header for PCB.

Then break the headers down to 10 pairs each and plug them into the end of the cut cable. Voila! Use a little super glue on the header plastic to make it permanent. Or run a bead of hot glue along the plastic to make it temporary.

Or you could likely get all you need to make exactly what you need from http://www.action-electronics.com I know they have both the male and female IDC (insulation displacement) header connectors. The only thing I'm not sure of is the 40-wire flat cable, but that is easy to find (just cut the length you need off one from your junk box - then all you'll need is the male, 40-pin, IDC header connector). All you need is a small vice to press the end(s) properly. (a small vice is cheaper than the proper hand pressing tool). OTOH, one or two C (or G)-clamp(s) and a couple small, flat pieces of hard wood or metal - not fancy but it'll "get 'er done"...

If you really need the use of ALL 40 pins, it might be better to make your own as many of the commercial drive cables have one hole blocked in the female connectors for a key (so only plug in one way - except for Bubba... 😉 ).
