Looking for an LCD, I'm lost

I have a basic understanding of response time and the ways in which manufacturers cheat to list a lower number here, so I'm really looking for a good brand name to start with rather than a specific model. Price isn't a concern per se, but I'm not going to spend $100 more for 1 more diagonal inch, so I've decided 19" is probably the best price:size ratio. My primary concern is lifespan: I use my PC a lot, for both work & play, so my monitor gets used a lot. Will I find the bulb dying or the colors fading after only a year or two? Eyestrain is another factor, it's the reason I'm upgrading from this 19" CRT. Are all LCDs equal in this respect? Ghosting is something I want to avoid as well, of course - What's the max response time needed to avoid this? Anyone have a brand/model suggestion? Preferably with a deal going on? 😀

I love my Samsung 213T, but it does have a very slight amount of ghosting, and at US$650 ($550 after rebate for me), it's probably slightly to the high side of your budget - though 1600x1200 at 21" is certainly tempting! (obviously, the temptation succeeded in my case) 😛

Gurck, that's a nice choice. Don't think you can go wrong with that. I've heard good things about the Samsung and the Hyndai.

Of course, you could always go with a Viewsonic xTreme 19". They have a 4ms response time.

Well, I'm considering this one, any thoughts? First hand experiences?
No DVI, which kind of spoils it for me. 🙁
Yeah, noticed that just after posting. How big is the image quality difference, and does it affect anything else (ie. response time / refresh rate)?

Saw them, they look nice but they're really up there in price, I'd like to keep it a bit lower.

Well, decided on the Hyundai I was looking at instead, 8ms, dvi, nice reviews. Should arrive later this week, I'll update with my thoughts on it.

I would ALWAYS go DVI if you have the choice.

I have a 20" NEC AccuSync LCD 200vx at work. I really don't like it. It's not nearly as nice as the Dell 20" I have at home.

Never used it, but looks like a good choice from the specs anyway.

L90D+ is a great monitor, but i think 5 out of 10 have a dead pixel, at least the ones i've seen at work

Got it, really beautiful picture quality. Text is a little grainy though, a friend says there's some kind of setting in windows that he can't remember (he uses linux) to clear text up on LCDs, but I can't find it. No dead pixels btw 🙂

Edit: found it, turned on cleartype and text looks fantastic now. Overall very pleased with this monitor.

Where is that setting found?

display properties -> appearance tab -> effects -> use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts

I have a 1905FP from Dell..... One of the better 19" panels out there with either Samsung or for some AUE(sp?) glass in it. it's an 8bit panel and that's why I bought it over the lower response 6bit panels.

Flat panels actually last longer than CRT's. THey have a far longer "half life" when compared to tubes.... in other words, the CRT will start dimming, blurring, and other-wise looking like crap long before the flat panle does.
