I barely print anything, but i'm looking for something cost effective. I never have to use color. Anything ring a bell?

Samsung has lasers for under $100, Dell too. They ship with 1/2 - 1/3 filled toner carts but that's still hundreds of pages worth and no worries about drying out or clogging.

A used / refurb LaserJet can be a good choice too, but takes up more room than the Samsung

Got a goodwill around you? The goodwill computer store usually has loads of laser printers - all checked out and with some toner. I picked one up for 50 bucks and the toner still hasnt run out ( ~2 years ago ).

A cheap samsung laser is like ~$100 but the toner is ~$70

The cheapest LaserJet 1020 is ~$110, toner is ~$30-40

i have two brand new epson ink jet photo printers that have been used once in the last 2 years. I really don't print often enough to worry about cartridge dry-ups. Do lasers dry out like ink jets ?

Brother has some with inexpensive-ish toner you can get pretty cheap AR and coupon at OfficeDepot.com.

Personally, I'd try to get ahold of one of those old used HPs we've had at work for over 10 years that still churn out prints like crazy. HP 4M's.

I got my brother laser for like 80 bucks.

like a year and a half later, it started smearing a little, called up brother, and their tech support sent me a new toner. I figure 80 bucks for 3-4 years worth of printing is pretty good.

I've probably printed like 800-900 pages on it so far.

No. I've used one toner cart over a period of a couple of years, no problems.

I have the Samsung ML2251N. Nice unit, prints fast as hell! Even though the carts are reasonable, I'm not too worried, because as little as I do print, the factory one will last me for years.

I checked an HP laser at work today, and it's churned out over 519,000 pages!

HP's are the best for business, hig volume printing, but Brother and Samsung make very competant home printers.

we have a lexmark optra at work that's a workhorse, but it's been through hell and back. More parts are broken/missing/not functioning everyday. I can't even count the number of times it's been replaced. FWIW, it also prints labels, signs, and regular plain paper, by using the expanded printer cassette.

You need to START looking in the peripherals forum.

Having stated my point: A low-end HP is your best bet.
I have had my LJ 1000 for several years and its going strong. Cartridges are cheap and last for about 4000 pages.
