I'm kind of stuck with making the decision of sticking with an eSATA external drive connected to my main machine or getting a NAS setup on a gigabit switch. The drives are SATAII.

I use this drive to store ISO's of OS's and software which I use fairly often for VM installation and for installing on clients computers. I also burn DVD's and CD's from this drive pretty often. I use this drive as a backup to my other drives in a few systems. I'm happy with the speed of the eSTAT connection but I don't like the fact that I have to have my main machine always on to use it. SO what do I do?

I'm looking for an enclosure that will accommodate at least one drive or maybe 2 or three. Price is an issue here.

I have a few older computers that I could install samba on if that would be the best option but I would like to have a smaller form factor if possible.

Can anyone suggest a good option here?

Looking at pricing on Newegg, it seems like an empty 2-bay NAS starts around $180 or so. What size of drives are you thinking of putting in there? I ask because a 3TB WD MyBook Live is only $220 and comes with a 3TB drive.
