looking for an electric guitar in 200-350 range

I own an acoustic guitar. I wanna start playing more of the metallica stuff. I was talking to a guy(not salesman) at the store. The man told me to look for good pickups, which can be identified as the ones with no screws, a rosewood or dark fretboard, and anything ltd sucks at the lower prices. Is ibanez any good? I dont want a tremolo, and dont like the idea of a guitar shaped where you must stand to play it. Any of you dudes got any advice or links? thanks.

You have to pretty much choose a guitar that looks good to you. Ibanez makes pretty decent low-end guitars. I hear that the Squire guitars aren't that bad either if you are looking for a strat or tele look-alike.

The guitar you have in your 2nd post doesn't look to bad. Looks similar to the Gibson SG.

Just make sure you get a decent amp. Amps pretty much make or break electric guitars.

I don't know what the Metallica guys use, but I've got a pre-lawsuit Hondo II Les Paul. It's exactly identical. They can be had on eBay for anywhere between $100 and $1000. I got mine for free, someone was getting rid of it and saw me with a guitar so he gave it to me 🙂. I think sometime around Christmas, I'm gonna get a new neck, replace it, repaint it, put some new humbuckers on it.. Man, it'll rock. 😀

thanks man. What amps would you reccommend? what should i look for in an amp other than alot of effects i guess?

That ESP looks okay. You should also take a look at the two below. My first guitar was the Ibanez, it was a very good guitar for its price. Schecters are also good guitars. But like SViper said, the AMP you get will make or break how it sounds.

edit: I'd stay away from Squires, they arent very well made, for the same price you could get alot better

Yeah, okay, they're knock-offs, but I hear really good things about them and have been considering getting one myself.

I've also heard good things about them from a guitar forum I frequent

I've heard they're (one of) the best in bang for the buck.. 😛 (I don't know how to put that in a sentence correctly 😛.)

It all depends on your budget range. Just like guitars, amps can run from $50 to $5000.

About the effects. It depends on what route you want to go. You can get an amp with no effects and use effect pedals, or you can get effects on the amp itself. It sounds like you are just jumping into this, so I would get one with the effects on the amp.

A friend of mine has this Line 6 amp and he says it works pretty well for him. Link

My brother has a clean amp (no effects onboard) and a pedal board and it works for him.

Unfortunately, I am only playing my acoustic guitar right now, so I really can't recommend any good amps. There are plenty of other guitar players on ATOT here that can help you out.

On the topic of amplifiers, I was able to pick up a Carvin XV-212 for $275 about 2 years ago. Of all of my musical equipment acquisitions, this is the one I'm the most pleased with in terms of price/performance. This thing sounds so sweet. I re-tubed it about 6 months ago and it sounds awesome.

Here's one for sale on eBay right now.

EDIT for some more details.

The amp has a two killer channels: clean and dirty, footswitchable. I use that for my distortion tones. The on-board reverb is also pretty good. For the rest of my effects (wah, phase, flange, delay, etc) I use a Korg AX-30G in the amp's effects loop which is also footswitchable.

looks pretty slick and has the good pickups right?

Just because they have pickup covers doesn't mean they're good. But it says right thurr that it has EMG pickups.. Never used them but EMG is the brand of pickups the Metallica guys use, if thats what you're after. That doesnt mean they'll sound like metallica though, back to the AMP 😛

Hey I appreciate the help you guys have given. Im not lookin to spend too much on an amp for now. At the most I'll just be playing by myself, maybe IK'll jam with my bro who plays drums every once in a while. Im looking to spend 100-200 on an amp. $300 is a bit too much.

Go directly to the source to get your Agile guitars.. not ebay

Rondomusic

Quick side note: Since this is your first electric, don't get a guitar with a tremolo. It will be a huge hassle to get it tuned right and to keep it in tune.

They're a good brand. One of the few ma & pa custom shops that didn't sell out. Telling a person what guitar to get it like telling them what shoes will fit them best. You have to go try some out and figure out what fits your hands and frame and price range. I'm a Gibson guy because my large hands wrap around their 50's series necks well. Gretsch, Martin acoustics, and Telecasters also suit me well. Strats, most Ibenez, Jacksons, Guilds, and some others give me problems due to narrow fret boards or neckshape.

I'm trying real hard to talk myself out of slapping down the credit card for this sweet looking baby right here.

Right now I play a Fender HM Strat which is sorta like a Ibanez-style strat (24 frets, S-S-HB pickups, Floyd Rose trem & locking nut), and I would LOOOOOVVEEE to add that Agile AL-2800 for a more Les Paul type sound.
