Hi, can anyone recommend a good area in San Jose to live in? I'm looking for a studio or 1 bedroom apartment and willing to spend $800-$1000/month.

What part of San Jose? Where in relation to your job do you want to live?

I'm starting a new job in Milpitas, but I currently live out of state, so I'm not that familiar with the area.

i guess it depends on which part of milpitas your job is at

other nearby cities that might be cheaper

Fremont, Milpitas, and Newark

its still that high? i keep seeing these poor sign holding slobs dancing on the street advertising the desperation of apartment landlords.

Fremont != cheap. Evergreen has nice appartments.

Stay away from Cupertino...

$2000/month for ~1000 sq ft 2 bedroom

All my neighbors drive M3s (2 new ones), ML 55 AMGs (2) etc.

I JUST moved into a fairly nice 1 bedroom/bath in Sunnyvale (about 5 minutes away from Milpitas) and I'm only paying 850 a month. I actually had my pick of places in that price range ... read up on Craigs list and if possible, schedule your appointments on a weekday. People are much more willing to negotiate if there aren't 3 other people waiting to see your apartment. Also, remember that you can negotiate the terms. On one apartment I dropped rent 25 bucks a month.

milpitas is cheaper than some portions of san jose.

evergreen has nice apts but i THINK they're pricey. i'm from the evergreen area but i've lived in my parents house all my life so i wouldn't know about the apt situation.

try here to see if you can find anything. got that from www.bayarea.com, the local paper (SJ Mercury News)

you should really look for san jose/milpitas. the commute from cupertino/sunnyvale/santa clara/campbell might have you hopping on 237, which wasn't fun but might have gotten better in the last few years.

san jose mercury classifieds as the above link is pretty much apartments.com and shows only expensive buildings.

You can have the one I'm moving out of, 1 bedroom, $950 a month. Nice complex right in Willow Glen area, but my appliances were a little old. I think the rent is cheaper now. I moved to Fremont.

If you're going to be in Milpitas, I'd recommend finding something in very north san jose, or even better Fremont or Newark. Fremont is probably the better bet than San Jose. Rent is cheaper there (not by much, but everything counts).

I just rented out a house with 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, and a two cars garage for $1700 a month. The house is near Milpitas too.

seconded. i live in the foothill area of san jose (right on the border of milpitas) and you might be better off staying in milpitas. the apartment rents are still very high in milpitas, but considerably lower than most parts of san jose (if i remember correctly a year ago). maybe $1300 will fit nicely into milpitas. cupertino/sunnyvale/saratoga/some parts of fremont are the worst, its extremely expensive there mainly because of schools, and since you dont have children, you dont need to worry about that. berryessa, alum rock, south san jose areas are considerably cheaper (although still very pricey) and some parts are a little degraded in quality, but not that bad.

yea, dont be surprised to see plenty of M3s and CL55s, S500s, and vipers rolling around san jose.

edit: forgot to mention my cousin rents an apartment up in fremont without a roommate, kitchen, room, bathroom, living room coming in about 1000 a month. forgot which apartment it was though, but fremont has some cheap areas as well.

Is anyone aware of an apartment locating service in that area? My sister recently used a company called Promove in Atlanta which was free. Basically you go in, tell them your budget, and they'll tell you what the best apartments in the area are. Unfortunatly, they don't have a branch in San Jose. I tried searching on google, but could find anything.
