I?m looking to buy a new PC primarily for graphics (Photoshop, Flash) and video editing, but gaming capability is also under consideration. Originally I planned on getting a customized Dell Dimension 9100 (Pentium D 830) since the price point was reasonable and gave me an option to upgrade the free LCD to the Dell 2405FPW (saving $400 CND). But now I?m not so sure if Intel is worth the investment so hopefully I can pickup some advice on a similar (or better) AMD build.
Dell 9100 Specs ($2800 CND):
Pentium D 830
1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM
256MB PCI Express x16 nVidia GeForce 6800
250 Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/ DataBurst Cache
24 inch UltraSharp 2405FPW Widescreen Digital Flat Display
(motherboard, case, psu, fans: all included)
From what I understand the AMD comparison of the D 830 is the 64 X2 3800+, but I?ve read great things about the 4400+ (performance and overclocking) and would like to focus on trying to build a system around that. Also I?m considering an EVGA GeForce 7800 GT PCI-E 256MB (w/ BF2), it?s a step up from the dell but I hear the cost is justified especially since BF2 is included. And for the case the Antec P180 (looks decent, rated well for sound (definite bonus) and has ports on the front. These are the only parts I feel good about, so I?m looking to you guys for suggestions and help on other compatible parts.
Below are some parts I?ve check out and read about here on the forums please comment on the better, or throw in different suggestions. For memory 1GB is enough for now (to keep costs down, unless there is a remarkable deal when you buy them at once)
Motherboard:
DFI LANPARTY UT NF4 ULTRA-D MOTHERBOARD ATX S939 NFORCE4 ULTRA DDR 2PCI-E16 PCI-E4 PCI-E1 2PCI..
Epox NF4 Ultra (easier to set up?)
PSU:
Seasonic (rated well for sound?)
Thermalright XP-90 (excellent cooling?)
Antec SP-500 SmartPower 2.0 500W (works with P180 case?)
Forton FSP/SPI AX500
Memory:
Patriot 2GB PC200 DDR Dual Channel Memory KIT
OCZ Performance 2x1GB
Hard drive suggestions welcome also (but I can keep that off for now, again to save money) I believe the Antec case comes with a couple fans but will I need another one for the CPU?. Anything else I?m missing?
Budget:
Trying to squeeze in under $2000 CND (about 1650 USD) for just the PC (but within reason, I?m willing to spend more than on the Dell and get higher end parts to compliment the CPU and GPU (and last a few years) but at the same time saving budget for the 2405FPW in the near future.
You?re welcome to use American retailers (ie. Newegg.com) to quote parts, but Canadian shipping options would be greatly appreciated. Long post, thanks for reading!
