Features desired:
Workstation: Excellent 2-d easy on the eyes high-resolution display. Dual display would be desired but not absolutely essential.
Games: not too much fast action 3-d type, again capability would be nice but not essential. I mostly play strategy games (such as Civ series).
Cost: obviously, as little $ as possible.

I?m running an Athlon 1.2 w/256MB pc-133 sdram.
:D

(more) the choices are bewildering, for now I'm looking at the:
-Gainward MX400/64mb sdram
-Visiontek Xtasy GTS-v
-Radeon 7200
-Radeon 32mb ddr dual vision
-kyro II (but I read here that it sucks for 2-d)

Voodoo3 or Matrox 400 sounds like a good fit for you.... either that, or spend a bit more for a low-end Radeon. No need to go overboard if your gaming is limited to Civ, which isn't a game which will really stress your video card :)

Thanks Glenn!
I ended up buying the GF2 GTS-v by visiontek thanks to the unbelievable price offered on Newegg (65 + shipping, wow!) I know, I know, way more than I need but maybe that will just give me an excuse to play more games :D
