Looking for an all-in-one machine

Dad needs to constantly fax medical records to the insurance company. Conveniently, the printer is on the fritz(won't print till a reboot, test print every power on, random characters). An all in one solution seems like a better solution then having two units stacked up in limited space. Staples/OM/OD all have a ton of units, but I don't have much experience with any of this.

A good recommendation for an all in one with a fax that is time stamped is what is needed. Nothing top of the line, just what would be the best available value.

Thanks. 🙂

If print quality isn't a big (not that it is awful, but that it doesn't compare to Canon, HP, etc.) issue than the Brother MFC-640 at Staples ($150. AR) is very good, esp. for faxing. I think all the Brothers have an integrated modem card, so it can operate as a fax even when disconnected from the PC. Brothers also have the most sophisticated network support of any AIOs I'm aware of. Almost every function is networkable including faxing. This makes the drivers a bit more complicated to install. I think the 640 has both 10/100 fax port and wireless network integrated. The other main feature of the Brothers is that they have passive, individual ink tanks and clones are available for a relatively low TCO. I get tanks for my Canon from swiftink.com (the "Official Ink Supplier to the Anandtech Forums") and they have tanks for the Brothers too. See their special offer at the top of the HOT DEALS section - they give AT forums frequent special deals.
. If you need top quality printing along with decent other features, then try to find a Canon MP-780. It is discontinued but offers great printing with about the lowest TCO out there (asumes refilling or using clone ink tanks). But even if you decide to use OEM ink tanks, it is still lowest against others using their OEM tanks. eBay may be the only place to fine one, but lucky folks have found one on a local big box store shelf. Be unlikely to find one in NYC, but call around as it's still possible.
. Last I'd look at a current MP model that uses the separate 5 and 8 series ink tanks. Clones are supposed to be near for the 8 series tanks and somewhere down the road for the 5 series tanks. See the thread here (in Peripherals section, where this thread belongs BTW) about the clone 8 tanks.
