I normally don't post life stuff on here, but this is some place where I think AT can be helpful. I also already think I know what I'm going to do, but I'm looking for people's opinions on the choice and possible reactions from managers on the board.

[*]I was underpaid and working a crappy job until end of September.
[*]I left and took a job with a former boss of mine who worked at the former company.
[*]I'm currently a contractor at this company so no benefits, vacation or anything.
[*]It's a pretty relaxed job. Hours are great.
[*]Got a job offer from another old boss which is similar to my current job.
[*]Job offer would be a little more money in salary, benefits, bonuses and equity in the startup.
[*]My contract is up in January and I would be able to start the new job in January.
[*]I'm currently working on a project and we're on schedule to be done by the time I would leave.
[*]I also told my possible new employer that I ultimately couldn't start until that project was complete.
[*]Both jobs offer about the same amount of stability. The startup is well funded right now, they have a solid idea and the guy running the show has done a startup before and made a lot of cash.

Knowing all of this, how do you think my current boss would react to this? I'd probably be giving him about 30 days notice.

You're a contractor. You're not supposed to be there forever. If you're offering 30 days notice, you're being more than generous and he should thank you for helping him out with your services and start looking for a replacement. If he give you a hard time, he's a schmuck and should have given you a longer contract.

Don't know why your current boss didn't hire you full-time instead of as a contractor, but regardless, he would have no right to be upset. Going to a full-time job seems like a no-brainer.

You will have completed your project and given ample notice. I think you will have fulfilled your obligations.

one gives benefits....the other does not. From what it sounds like, the one that does pays more too.....this looks like a no brainer.... Your boss will not care b/c you are a contractor. It is not a perm job.
