My main rig:

Barton 2500+ @ 3200+
DFI Ultra
GF4 Ti 4400
512mb Geil
120gb Maxtor
PX708A

I want so many things, but have so little cash. Right now I can spend $550 max, but I only want to spend about $400(I don't want to get caught with no comp-spending cash) now and then save up another $400 or so by January. My main goal is to get a system that will make me go "wow" at FarCry/D3/HL2.

Obviously that GF4Ti is out of place. I was planning to get a Leadtek 6800GT for under $400 and be done with it for another few years. But then I remembered my monitor. It's a lame Gateway 17" EV700 I picked up a few years ago dirt cheap. The thing can barely do 1280x1024! It's crippling any of my plans. I would really like a 19" crt monitor that is top of the line for all the new games. So I did some research. I can get the NEC 930SB(which is highly recommended everywhere) at dell for $290 with free shipping(which dell says ends by October). I hear Dell's monitor policy is better than newegg's/(insert reputable vendor).

I'm comfortable right now with the CPU, since with all the new standards(PCIE, Socket 939, w/e) I doubt I'll be changing motherboards for quite some time. I've given up on the idea of the mobile 2500+ I don't have the money for only ~200 more mhz. I could use another stick of that ram, which is about $80.

I'm also trying to keep in mind I'll probably be getting a dual-layer DVD-RW once the media for it is available, unless some hacker comes up with a firmware upgrade for my PX708A, which I now feel I was cheated on big time.

What I've come up with is; get that monitor now, then wait until sometime next year to grab a new GPU, and just forget about everything else.

If anyone has any advice to help me get a 1280x1024-or-higher gaming system, I'm open to anything right about now.

Thanks,
Kale

So is a 1600x1200 display or playing those games (at 1280x1024 max quality)more important to you this year?

The 6800GT is actually under $350 in a couple of recent hot deals, and I think one even included Doom3, so you'd have D3 plus the $50 to buy HL2.

6800GT for sure.

If you're tight on the cash try and get Newegg's eVGA 6800GT + Doom3 combo... last I saw it was $385, but for $350 that's an awesome deal.

Doom3 will not disappoint even on a lower end card, but with the GT it'll be mind blowing.

Good luck with the deals and the future gaming..
