Hey guys,
My name is John and even though I have been out of the computer scene for awhile, I have decided to build a new computer as my old one is just not up to par anymore. Hopefully, you guys will be able to help me critique some of the parts I chose, and double check to make sure I am not making any huge mistakes.
1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
My PC is going to be used as a HTPC so I can record live tv using my xbox 360 as a media extender. I am also in college so it will be used to surf the net, reports, and light applications like that. I would also like it to be pretty quiet since it will be close to my bed when I am at college.
2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
I am looking to spend sub $500, though lower is better since I am just using it for such light applications.
3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
United States
4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.
I am not a fanboy of anything, though I am looking to stick with the intel 775 socket in case I decide I do want to game on it. I figure I could always upgrade the CPU, GPU, and PS if I ever decided to game in the near future. However, I wouldn't be against other suggestions if it would moderately lower the cost.
5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
GPU
6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.
Yes, but unfortunately there are nto as many as there used to be.
7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
I plan on some light overclocking to increase performance, but since it will be my first overclock I will probably not try to max it out.
Alright, now that thats out of the way. Here is what I am thinking for parts. Let me know if you have any suggestions, or think I can get a better deal on something. Ultimately, I would like to go as cheap as possible without sacrificing a large amount of performance.
Case: P-182 $70
Power Supply-Antec NeoPower NeoHE 380 ATX12V 380W Power Supply $20
Memory: This I am unsure about. I am thinking two gigs would be good for me and I can get that for around 35$ on newegg. However, I am not sure on what would be the best for overcooking. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. One other question for you guys, though. Would 4 gigs be overkill? I ask this because I am seeing supertalent memory in the hotdeals section.
CPU: Again unsure, I know I want to go dual core but I am unsure what processor. Should I go C2d dual core for more money, or go with a cheaper dual core pentium/celeron.
GPU: Have it, used just for DVI input for monitor.
Motherboard: ABIT IP35-E LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard 60$
OS: Vista premiuim $80
DVD/RW Drive: Any good brands I should be looking for? Or is anything good?
Hard Drive: Looking for anything cheap, quiet, and preferably SATA.
TV Tuner: Suggestions?
Heatsink: Scythe Ninja (Getting for low noise and good cooling)
Alright guys, I know my post was long but any help would be appreciated.
-John
Edit: Even though no one has replied, I might as well update the new components I am thinking of. For the processor, I am thinking of going with the E2200. As for HD I am thiking Samsung.
